Mormonism, at best, is sort of Christian adjacent as they truly follow their sequel to the New Testament, with Jesus running around America with the Garden of Eden in Missouri. OK and you do you. But Christian Nationalism isn’t really about a more liberal approach to Christianity and it certainly isn’t about adjacent interpretations. The history of the Latter-Day Saints should have them very concerned with any thinking that they’re going to be accepted by a fundamentalist regime. They fled to Utah for such reasons.

Why is this surprising to anyone? Of course Pete Hegseth, a supporter of the New Apostolic Movement, would not consider the Mormons Christian.
Heck, almost all American Evangelicals don’t think Catholics are Christian.
A huge amount, maybe even a majority, of military linguists and other intelligence personnel are LDS.
Seeing Christian nationalists tear each other apart over the “wrong” branches of Christianity is very amusing to me. I mean, it’s bad for the country as a whole but at least they’re also having a bad time.
This was always their opinion of Mormons right up until Romney became the nominee. Then, magically, it was accepted.
From my observations, most people who call themselves Christians aren’t christian.

Of course they would think that. Trump and his party of heathens (both in the GOP and MAGA alike) aren’t real Christians of any kind. If they were, then the Trump Bible wouldn’t exist and people wouldn’t be saying that he’s God in human form.
Christianity is not a religion or faith. Christianity is a merchandise campaign combined with a time share scheme.
Mormons made their bed
This is why Christian Nationalism is terrible even for Christians. Once they come after the jews, muslims, and non-believers, there is nothing stopping the state from declaring your Christian sect heretical.
Evangelicals have always considered Mormons as outsiders and non-Christians. Former evangelical here. We were taught they are heretical and even satanic in that they worship the fall of man and in need of conversion. I’m not saying any of this is true. I’m saying what we were taught about them in the evangelical church. Don’t come at me, Mormon mafia. I don’t want to be involved in some Bricks and Minifigs level scandal.
Mormons self-identify as Christian. Unfortunately for them, the extremists they’ve managed to help elevate to power believe that only their own „objective“ metrics can be used. Ergo, Mormons are classified as heretics and apostates, not Christians.
If we want to get in the weeds with this: the Mormon self-identification is, in part, an attempt to redefine the term. They’ve reused the same terminology here, but Christianity to Mormons is not consistent with what that term generally means to the rest of the religious community. It’s sort of like how people like Kegseth here define „conservative“ and „American“ in a way inconsistent with the historic meaning of those terms.
