    1. From the article

The CEO of Google DeepMind said a more advanced AI is just around the corner — and humanity needs to prepare as soon as possible.

During a fireside chat at the Stanford Graduate School of Business that was posted on Tuesday, Demis Hassabis said artificial general intelligence, or the ability for AI to perform cognitive tasks at or beyond human levels, is a few years away.

„Maybe 2030, plus or minus a year, which is astounding to think, really. I think that will be such an enormous transformative technology; it’s gonna effectively be a new human era,“ Hassabis said.

ok so what will change ? will we be able to cure all disease and have unlimited energy ? cause something tells me nah

    3. Remember kids.. this is from the same industry that said an iPad would replace every computer you own (boom, wrong), you would never see cash again in, only crypto (boom, wrong) and that VR is the future and we would never go to work/school but rather walk around virtually (boom, wrong).

Burn and die, POS AI hype. I’m not saying the tech doesn’t have promise .. but then again we’ve been using the good parts for many years now (Machine Learning, Detection models etc). This whole „humanity 2.0“ needs to piss off .. especially when told by the wankers selling it.

    4. Just more marketing bullshit. This is going to be the new cold fusion; we’ll forever be five years away from AGI.

I hope the „new era“ doesn’t come from the hands of these evil spirits.

First, we would have to dethrone all these companies and billonaries that only dedicate themselves to spying and data collection, and then the new era of AI will be welcome.

    6. It was also a few years away a few years ago.

In a few years from now, it’ll be only a few more years away.

    7. Will believe it when I see it-auto-correct still doesn’t even work properly nor does swype to type. You’d think „AI“ would be the perfect thing for that since it uses patterns to detect outcomes.

Its a joke that language models will automate all jobs people really under estimate all the things we humans can do.

    9. love seeing replies full of people who 1) never read the article and 2) are smarter than the guy with a nobel prize who went to study neuroscience to work on ai

      lol lmao even

These tech leaders probably think they are being gracious with these warnings, but it’s basically the least they could do. “Get ready” is a bullshit “warning”. They need to advise on what to do. But they don’t really know, and aren’t that invested in humanity.

Ai hype, Ai hype, Ai hype. Recent weeks have seen companies spending a month’s worth of tokens in a single day. Anthropic asking for a world pause in development, and also now alongside deep mind, investigating AI consciousness. “All aboard…the AI hype train”, choo, choo.

    12. I am worried about the consequences of huge swaths of unemployed hungry people. Honestly…that is that scares me the most and not AI itself which is basically a tool….and also people that have their hands on such technology and huge resources to sustain it….those guys scare me as well…

It’s hard to predict things with ai since it’s all new grounds so predicting several years in the future ?

      My guy you are guessing.

    14. My main question would be at what point does theoretically AGI gain its own agency. Because what it might accomplish under the control of the humans that develop it might not be the same as what it would do if left to its own devices (even if not sapient if that’s the correct term, something that could evaluate existing problems and decide what to focus on without regard for humans making money off it).

I’m not sure what the odds are of this sorta thing happening anytime soon. But we probably already have enough evidence of how it plays out given current trends to prepare…if we can find the political will.

They’re warning about this while actively pushing for the thing they’re “warning” about. It’s a sick and pathetic sort of hypocrisy.

„The new human era“ only works if regulations protecting the average citizen keep up and Alphabet has made repeated efforts to skirt every regulation they can to advance profits.

Otherwise we just go into a dystopian reality that’s either going to become similar to Idiocracy or Blade Runner.

    17. Is it the super secret signal to start burning data centers around the world? If only OVH built more of them they would have done it themselves

    18. spirit_desire on

Ah so how should the average person prepare? Undoubtedly we should all follow and trust the geniuses who warned us, right?
