Carney strikes me as power hungry and even more keen on centralizing power within PMO than Trudeau was, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he actually yelled at MPs; at the same time, I’d probably lose my temper too if I had people like MP Battiste in my caucus
This is also the MP who told the Liberal caucus not to speak to reporters, virtually guaranteeing they will do so. He also went on Power & Politics and treated host David Cochran and viewers like idiots by refusing to comment on Steven Guillbaut’s departure the day before he stood up in Parliament and quit.
He’s a Liberal party robot, devoted to publically saying only what will help his party and never confirming anything negative, even if it’s plain to see.
I think we’ve seen enough to know that Carney can be a brittle prick. But we’re in an existential fight for Canada’s long-term survival. Not quite war, but not too far from it. And the man is clearly working overtime, with insane focus, non-stop. So, I think any complainers should suck it up, or quit and let someone more dedicated to the mission fill their role.
There are reports from his time in the UK that he has a hot temper and expects people to fall in line.
I don’t get why they need to deny something that was even visible during the election campaign with his feisty exchanges with journalists.
Just lean into it, and say yes, he has yelled at MPs and demands party discipline. A cover-up is far worse than just admitting his personality.
Yelling is not really good contemporary management practice, but it’s not unheard of Carney’s generation.
Some of these liberal MPs need a little, ah, coercive talking to after the sunshine and rainbows and kumbaya masking incompetence of the Trudeau era.
You’re an MP. Work your ass off to serve your constituents and the government agenda.
We’ve done the group hug PM, where everyone gets a prize.
I’m down for someone who doesn’t suffer fools given the context. At a certain level though, he needs to be mindful that the other people in caucus are elected officials as well, not employees.
Frankly a bit of yelling is sometimes needed to get employees in line. Especially if they are losing focus. Good on Carney for not sugar coating things and being straight with his staff on what he needs to accomplish making Canada stronger
Speaking as a 29 year old millennial, there’s a lot of older folks who confuse clarifying questions and curiosity as disrespect. People of Carney’s generation tend to be inflexible, ‘do as I say not as I do’ types, and as a technocratic banker the PM has never actually had to face real scrutiny and accountability from the public, be it the media or his caucus.
What’s more, there’s the minimum 20 MPs on the Liberal left that can’t be very happy about the incoherent Middle East policy and the cuts to social services.
I see a lot of Carney supporters trying to defend this by saying he “doesn’t suffer fools” or is “telling MPs to do their jobs” and acting like as a leader it should be ok for him to yell at MPs in his party.
Except, the reports are that he’s yelling at MPs *raising their concerns*. We’re already seeing the pattern of the Carney government totally ignoring the concerns and demands of ordinary Canadians – from rolling back environmental regulations and dismantling the agencies responsible (and that in a time where Canada is already behind on its climate commitments), we see him totally ignoring the cost of living crisis and crumbling social services in favour of going all out on arms spending, we see him trying to force through controversial oil and gas and minerals projects, we see him deepening Canada’s complicity in the genocide in Palestine in particular and a cheerleader of US imperialist violence in general despite how unpopular these are, and then most recently we saw his toothless “AI policy” that ignores legitimate concerns over massive hyperscale data centre expansion as well as regulation of AI that even some AI companies themselves are calling for.
So now we’re finding out that all this is not happening in a vacuum, the concerns of ordinary Canadians are actually being brought up to him by MPs (which btw in a democratic society is their job much more so than being “yes men”), and he’s choosing to yell at them and silence *our voices* as Canadians. It’s shocking to me that all of this is considered acceptable, and I look forward to further fractures in this made-up “majority government”.
These articles are so funny to me because if you were to ask the average Canadian what they think of MPs getting yelled at until they deliver solutions the most common response would probably be “good”
To reiterate what I said before when the story first broke, I expected this to happen but I’m thoroughly unimpressed. I don’t care what people say about not tolerating fools or being in a crisis. This is poor behaviour and should be called out as such.
You can’t claim to be capable of handling a crisis if you’re emotional management goes out the window whenever you’re stressed. If that’s the case than you evidently *can’t* handle a crisis, especially since you’ll need a team around you to see it through.
If this is true, I think Carney should remember that he’s in a cabinet with people who’ve been there a lot longer than he has. Those people are also not him employees, he’d be well advised to remember that.
