I still thinl its corpo revenge for all the people quitting after covid
And yet AI is also becoming a reason why many companies are hiring, and hiring back. Two major AI-heads, Sam Altman being one, have had to walk-back their statements that AI would lead to massive job losses. It’s their first viral product, you have to allow for their inaccurate judgement. After they’ve launched 20 viral products they ought to be more-reliable sources of macroeconomics estimates.
AI won’t replace job they said… It will create more jobs in the future they said… and not forget the UBI theory
Whether it really is the reason or it isn’t, shareholders mop this up like gold, so it’s become the default reason for any company to cut costs and sack staff.
Some of the layoffs might also be for other reasons (like over hiring after covid or general cutbacks) but give this reason because it sounds better (to investors).
Mass layoffs were planned anyway. AI is just the convenient excuse.
Would be very interested in hearing from the remaining employees about how their workloads changed. Our company uses ai as an excuse also, but it’s really internal consolidation of jobs, making everyone more busy and stressed out than before. AI isn’t doing anything to help productivity. A person who had two jobs before now has three. The exec level bean counters seem happy though.

Companies are lying all the time, why would it not be the case for this…
