There is “strong support” among EU home affairs ministers to exclude men who could be called up to the military from Europe’s temporary protection scheme for Ukrainian refugees, said Swedish Migration Minister Johan Forssell.
The temporary status scheme — under which more than 4 million people who fled Ukraine have been given the right to work, live and study in European countries — will expire in March 2027. The directive has already been extended several times and preparations to prolong it once more are underway. A proposal to exclude men aged 23 to 60, who may be conscripted, from the scheme is being discussed.
Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of EU home affairs ministers in Luxembourg on Thursday, Forssell said the ministers had been “more or less unanimous” in favoring an extension of temporary protection.
From what I heard, I also think there was a strong support for excluding the ones with travel bans,” said Forssell — referring to men barred from leaving the country because they could be called upon to fight against Russia.
Asked whether he expected the European Commission to include that idea in its upcoming proposal, Forssell said: “Absolutely.”
“That’s also what the Ukrainians want us to do,” stated Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner in a press conference following the meeting.
The Commission had listened “very carefully to the ministers … and especially to those who are most affected … the Czech Republic, the Baltic States, Poland, Germany, Austria,” he said.
The proposal is expected to land in the coming weeks, according to the commissioner.

So, how does that work? A man’s duty is to do the dying, and a woman’s role is… to go to safety in another country, where she’ll likely have children and never come back again?
What’s woman’s role in this?
Okay, they can’t do the fighting(which is also only true for physically demanding part of the military, like infantry and marines which is around 30% of the head count), then let’s let’s not tax them to support the war effort and also let’s not force them to have children to repopulate either.
So essentially, women don’t have to give ANYTHING, while men are required to give their LIFE
Now THAT is what European countries will enforce now

I don’t see what good will come out of this. If sent back and they get conscripted they will have horrible morale and won’t be of much use militarily. Ukraine already has issues with desertion/AWOL, why make it worse?

I’ve a feeling a there would be strong support to exclude men of this age from all refugee schemes; and this would massively increase sympathy and support toward women and children refugees from all countries.

That’s absolutely regarded, I really hope they won’t go through with.

This is going to absolutely destroy morale and some of those refugees that get sent back are not going to be useful members of the military and just end up being fuel for the meat grinder.
Some people are made for combat. Some aren’t. But those people that aren’t can still contribute in other ways.
Ukraine’s manning problem won’t be fixed by this. It’ll just make the situation worse. They need to be doing more to open up military slots to foreign nationals that want to join the fight (and incentivize it with better things), not trying to drag back citizens that clearly have no intention of fighting

Can anyone knowledgeable about military stuff comment on whether it is possible to conscript women for non combat military roles? I guess that would make it more fair and helpful to Ukrainian efforts. Although maybe Ukrainians want this gender selective conscription to remain?

EU should be consistent and exclude fighting-age males from Middle East and Africa as well.
Those for sure don’t belong in Europe.

This seems blatantly sexist against men. If men can be conscripted then women should also be conscripted at the same rate.

this policy makes sense logistically but the implementation’s gonna be messy. ukraine needs those men for the war effort, so excluding them from eu protection is consistent with that goal. the tricky part is enforcement, figuring out who actually has a travel ban vs who’s just claiming they do. expect a lot of appeals and legal challenges once it goes live.

Weird how this never came up for the Syrian conflict. Or any other conflict besides a European one. NOW men must stay and fight, uh huh, cool. Nevermind the millions upon millions of fighting age men that flooded Europe, they had no duty to fight for their countries, sometimes not even a conflict, just shitty economies.
