    1. Homosexuality was never illegal in the Ottoman Empire. They just made it official in 1858 when Abdulmecid reformed the law system.

      This map is misleading.
Homosexuality was made legal in Poland in 1932 but this map lists 1945 because that’s when the germans (who delegalized it) stopped occupying Poland.

    3. *looks at the dates for the BeNeLux

Hum i wonder where that could have come from

I’m shocked how late France legalized gay marriage relative to other countries after seeing this map because *damn.*

    5. Estonia should have both 1935 and 1992.

I guess only 1935 if you would want to go by de jure.

Netherlands is misleading. In 1811 it was decriminalised through the Netherlands being a Napoleonic puppet state and copying Frances penal code. In 1911 these freedoms were somewhat restrained again and it was made completely illegal by the German occupiers in the 1940’s. Only in the 60’s the legal status was fully returned to its pre 1911 state.

Homosexuality in Russia/USSR was decriminalized in times of Lenin, but Stalin returned the sodomy law

Why do I feel like neutral Sweden and Switzerland were both trying to stick it to the reich?

Swedes were pretty awful to gay people long after 44, homosexuality was still a „mental illness“ and some were lobotomized and sterilized to try and treat or stop the spread of these so called diseases.

You should add a 2023 to russia as a date when homosexual relationships ceased to be *legal* again

Should be „since when“, not first time legalized, it is misleading. Also territorial borders have changed eversince

    11. Worth noting that Lenin legalized it in 1917 but Stalin recriminalized it in 33.

    12. „Legal“ doesn’t mean people accept it more like there’s no specific punishment for it.

But people might still see as degeneracy and you can be jailed or lynched for it like the DRC and Central African Republic

Or promoting it can be crime like in Jordan or Russia, despite it being „legal there“

Seeing this reminds me to be proud of the progress Ireland made, becoming the first country to legalise gay marriage by popular vote in 2015

This chart is confusing as hell, some countries like the Netherlands list the first time they decriminalised homosexuality, ignoring that it was later recriminalised, while countries like Poland list the most recent time it was decriminalised, ignoring past decriminalisation.

1890 for Italy is kinda impressive given that the country only came into existence in 1860. So they did it after only 30 years of existence.

It was decriminalised in 1795 in Tuscany. Unfortunately, we were occupied by far less civilised individuals.

Only 33 years between homosexuality being decriminalised and gay marriage being legalised in Scotland. Only 22 for Ireland.

    18. Puzzleheaded-Sun7418 on

It’s misleading in Spain. Prior to the last dictator, it was not illegal in the republican law. It only was after Franco won the civil war and was decriminalised again after he died.

I am thinking it’s also probably misleading in many other countries. Not sure if to paint some kind of idea of better or worse countries or what exactly

Correction: Even it was forbidden according to Islamic Law, homosexuality has always been tolerated in Ottoman Empire (Türkiye). There are countless of historical records depicting memoirs, stories, poems demonstrating that fact.
