But in a Wednesday radio interview Premier Smith told QR Calgary and 880 CHED that when it comes to the United Conservatives, her word is the last word, and the party’s official position is that it wants Alberta to stay in Confederation.
„Let me be clear, because I do speak for our government, our caucus and our party,“ she said. „Our party had as its founding principles that we support autonomy for Alberta within a united Canada.
„Every one of my MLAs got elected on that,“ she said.

Premier Marlania Danielle Smith is the female version of Donald Trump and hopefully when the next Alberta Provincial election comes around she and the rest of the United Conservative Party will have their employment in the provincial government terminated with cause.

I have a feeling that Smith has some information in her role as Premier that she is not sharing with her party brass (likely as the separatists hold many prominent roles there). I think either she has been clearly told of the economic consequences of separation uncertainty, or enough of her caucus has told her they won’t stay around if the party has an official separatist position.
However, she painted herself into a corner by placating the separatists for so long and needs a way to “end” the debate. That is my theory about the referendum on the referendum (vote to remain ends the issue, vote to move forward kicks the can down for likely another year). It is also my theory about why she has suddenly gone from a neutral positions (while giving the separatists the fuel they need to move forward) to taking an official position of voting to remain.
The separatists are kind of stuck too. They talk big about removing Smith and replacing the UCP with separatist sympathizers because they know they are totally unelectable if they actually run as separatists. They need a “conservative” title to get elected. If they actually turn the UCP full separatist without the vagueness of playing both sides like they are doing now, they risk losing the 45% of UCP federalist voters, major donors, and the federal conservative party’s backing.
So why did you put your thumb on the scale to help the sepratists?
Traitors.
The heart of Alberta separatism is white settler grievance politics. Let’s put it to a vote and have the people decide. If we must have a referendum question regarding Alberta separation, I want my referendum question too, it’s only fair and democratic.:
„Do you support the dissolution of the Province of Alberta, the recognition of Treaty 6, 7, and 8 territories as self-governing Indigenous nations, and the establishment of a Committee of Cities to coordinate economic and infrastructure policy across the region?“
