the number is very similar for ukrainians too, I dont know why this is never mentioned anywhere. Refusing to accept that defending the country is costing a huge amount of lives plays right into the russian plan…

I honestly don’t even care about the numbers anymore. Every day it’s either 100 billion ukrainians dead or 50 trillion russians or 350k or 500k or a million.

Is there any point to this ? The conflict isnt over even.

Like no matter what number anyone publishes, it wont affect anything anywhere. The only achievement in this is informational fatigue.

      Why won’t Russians revolt…

Even if Putin opened fired on them, there would still be less deaths than those dying in Ukraine

At some point the soldiers will join the people.

    4. I don’t trust a lot of information when it comes to war, but I definitely trust spy chiefs. Spies are the most honest and straightforward people I’ve ever met.

I don’t feel in any way good wishing that the number was much higher – but I do.

Literally the only way the Old Soviet High Command were made to realise that Afghanistan was a massive mistake that had to end, was when the Mothers of the dead and injured effectively „pressured“ civil society to put an end to it – and that was under Soviet clampdowns on dissent. And it happened.

The pain now has to reach a tipping point in Putin’s dystopian nightmare that ordinary civies do more than just grumble, they actively stop „cooperative“ measures with local recruitment.

      „Russians“

I think you’ll find that it’s provincial imperial subjects from outside russia proper that are cannon fodder in this war.

That is 50 times the number of soldiers killed in the Afghanistan occupation by Russia, which they were forced to abandon.

      In half the time…

    8. The UK figure almost certainly means 500k total casualties killed and wounded combined not 500k dead. That’s still staggering, but the distinction matters when people are comparing it to other wars.

The Afghanistan comparison misses something critical though. Soviet mothers in the 1980s could organize because the state eventually acknowledged deaths. Families got zinc coffins and knew their sons were gone. Russia today has built a completely different system. Families are told their relatives deserted, or went missing, or just receive no information at all. The mobilized men aren’t officially deployed they’re contractors, volunteers, „not there.“ We’ve been tracking how casualty information gets suppressed at panopsik.com since early in the war, and the gap between what Western intelligence reports and what Russian families are told has only widened.

That information control is why the pressure mechanism that ended Afghanistan hasn’t kicked in yet. It’s not that Russians are more compliant now. It’s that the feedback loop between battlefield losses and domestic awareness has been surgically severed in ways the Soviets never managed.

This is quite possibly true. But taking anything a ’spy chief‘ says at face value is a bit naive.

    10. Yeah… I do not trust anyone when it comes to casualty numbers. Everytime it is estimations or claims from „reputable sources“.

    11. Immediate-Unit6311 on

And how many Ukrainian soldiers killed??

Or is that not allowed to be spoken about?

    12. Redditreallysucks99 on

Most reliable estimates are in the range of 200,000 dead, not 500,000. Ukrainian confirmed dead are over 90,000. If you take into account the population size it’s not clear who is bleeding who out at the moment.

    13. With wars the dead are the least of their problems. A dead man needs only a gravestone. They will see that the soldiers who were wounded, lost limbs, got PTSD and will just drink for the rest of their lives will form an ongoing burden on the state.

The 500k dead will not trouble anyone. The 1-2 million of crippled (either physically or mentally) veterans will soak up their resources for decades.

    14. Russians are so compliant it’s insane.

The soldiers the UK tragically lost in 20 years in Iraq and Afghanistan Russia loses in a morning.

That is wildly high for a modern conflict. If one said casualties, it would make more sense but Russia is truly meat grinding its young men. Sucks that Russian leadership never gives a damn about its people
