At the height of Beatlemania, the Fab Four seemed untouchable with a string of hits that left them “more popular than Jesus”.

Now, Sir Paul McCartney has finally named an artist he would rank alongside his former band – pop queen Taylor Swift.

In a recent interview, the music veteran expressed his admiration for the American pop singer, describing her as “clever” and a “very good” performer.

She doesn’t have the same cultural penetration as the beatles. Her sales figures are propped up by the rabidity of her fanbase, not her widepsread appeal. And most of her songs are just plain musically uninteresting, as satisfying as they may be to their core demo, so she will not have anything like the same enduring legacy. All in all, a trivial comparison, but one that highlights Paul’s graciousness.

    3. She is as big as them commercially, but will never be as influential. The Beatles revolutionized music. Taylor just sings pop songs.

The two remaining Beatles alive have said the same about Taylor, watch people that wasn’t born at that time saying that they are wrong

    5. As always, there’s an element of rage baiting and nuance that is lost on a lot of people.

We’re comparing different times entirely. The world of music has changed almost inconceivably since The Beatles. While it’s great that Paul McCartney is happy to pass the torch, so to speak, they’re incomparable. Taylor Swift might have „more“ fans, but there are more people with a wider ability to consume music. The Beatles might have been more influential, but again, different times at a period where one is still at their peak.

Kinda crazy that one of the actual Beatles says this and you guys want to disagree with him

    7. Well I’ll admit that if anyone is qualified to make that statement it’s probably Paul McCartney.

    8. She probably is as big as the Beatles record sales and streaming number wise, but as far as cultural impact I just don’t think it’s comparable at all.

    9. I wonder if we’d have as many alt rock adjacent pop crossover solo female artists if it weren’t for Taylor Swift.

I like both Taylor Swift and The Beatles. There’s no denying The Beatles are very influential but they also released a lot of dogshit songs too. Some of them you just hear and think “yup, this is all drugs”

Always found it nice how Paul and Taylor have always spoken highly of each other plus they are friends, would be cool seeing a collab between them or something

    12. Completely true.

Went to the Eras Tour and I had the thought leaving that it’s the closest I’ll ever get to seeing Beatlemania.

Teenage girls and 35 year old moms were all crying when she took the stage.

Someone remind me to go back to college when I’m old so I can take another music history course and study her legacy.

      John was 5’10.5

      Paul is 5’11

      George was 5’10

      Ringo is 5’6

*That means Taylor Swift is at LEAST 23’1.5ft tall.*

Brace yourselves: a Paul McCartney and Taylor Swift collab is on the way

In my city Taylor sold out a 65k person arena two nights in a row and still people were gathered for a 3 block radius around the venue each night that couldn’t get tickets singing to the songs.

I wasn’t there when Beatles came through but they notably sold out the cities largest venue 2 nights in a row and has similar crowds outside, the venues capacity was 12k. Our cities population has only doubled in that time.

Taylor might honestly be bigger than the Beatles, culture is just so awash in various media streams people can tune stuff out now or tune into an infinite number of subcultures.

I mean yes and no. The Beatles were an overnight sensation when they arrived in the U.S, and ignited a phenomenon of mass hysteria.

Taylor Swift has been doing her thing and growing her brand for 20 years, and peaked in popularity only a few years ago.

„I wanna be bigger than Jesus, and bigger than wrestling.
Bigger than the Beatles, and bigger than breast implants..
I’m gonna be the biggest thing to hit these little kids..
Bigger than guns, bigger than cigarettes.“

As much as I want to disagree with this, he’s likely right! Her last tour proves just how massive she truly is whether you like her or not! Her numbers speak for themselves and you don’t become a billionaire entertainer by being hated!

    20. I’m glad he’s saying it, people have this weird thing where it’s hard to admit how huge she is! Like I get the swifties are off-putting and her music is hit or miss, but you can’t deny how popular she is as an artist

    21. TheEffinChamps on

I find her music really bland, but she has gotten a lot of women into playing guitar, which is fantastic.

    22. This is a thing that can only be determined by the passing of time. If her music is still as popular and influential in 60 years, then great! I’ll be dead so I’ll never know the answer

    23. SpaceMyopia on

Whether or not you agree with it….

      A Beatle has spoken. 🤷🏾‍♂️

    24. Until she has people in the middle of the rainforest, hundreds of miles away from civilization with no internet still able to recognize her, she’ll never be THAT famous.

    25. KatKittyKatKitty on

Meh. He is being humble. What The Beatles accomplished in under 10 years easily overshadows Taylor’s whole career. I would argue Beyoncé has had a bigger impact on culture and music in the 21st century.

    26. Dazzling-Toe-4955 on

She is even if you just consider the eras tour. She did 149 shows, 50 cities, 5 continent’s. It’s the most successful tour across any genre of music ever.
