    1. >The U.S. and China share a common goal: building a human habitat at the lunar south pole. Both nations are locked in a race to land astronauts on the Moon and secure vital resources needed to establish a permanent base. Although the Moon is an unregulated frontier, a new report suggests that the U.S. should be prepared for a fight over control of lunar resources and territory.

      >The Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies recently published a [paper](https://www.mitchellaerospacepower.org/events/military-human-spaceflight-a-key-component-to-american-space-superiority/) pushing for a military human spaceflight program that could eventually place active-duty U.S. Space Force (USSF) personnel on the Moon and on board orbital space stations for defensive operations against China’s alleged military-focused space initiatives. The report signals a dark turn for the ongoing space race, suggesting that orbital warfare looms behind ongoing efforts to establish a permanent presence on the Moon.

      >The report, written by retired USSF Colonel Kyle Pumroy, warns of the threats that “China’s military-led space habitation and lunar ambitions” pose for U.S. national security. Pumroy argues that the U.S. human spaceflight and Moon programs “have been marred by inconsistency in vision, policy, and funding, allowing China to gain steady ground over time.”

Oh God imagine getting shot in a spacesuit on the moon. Do you just have like almost no chance of survival?

Im still waiting for the Space Force to respond to my application to be a Space Shuttle door gunner.

In space, Fortunate Son can still be heard from miles away.

Nation puts vulnerable military base on moon.

Other nation drops a rock on vulnerable military base on moon.

No more military bases on moon.

    5. sure, lets just expand our imperialist ambitions to outer space because there is nothing more appealing than watching fellow humans die over water ice in some lunar crater when the alternative of just doing international cooperation is still very much available to us.

    6. Are we just looking for well established international norms and signed treaties to violate now?

But they don’t want Americans to have affordable Healthcare. What exactly is the American military even protecting? Because it’s definitely not the American citizens

Jokes aside, a war on the moon is… essentially impossible to do without immediately losing both bases. Like, if you had a proper conflict on the moon, you basically guarantee that both bases will be wiped out, simply because you will have a very very high chance of destroying life support systems or punching many many holes in the base, and then you are just kinda… done. Like, game over, base destroyed. I doubt that we’ll see full blown battles on the moon because of this, probably something closer to a MAD strategy.

    9. Oh good, we need them up there to what, fend off the Principality of Zeon???

Let’s see if we can *reliably* **LAND** on the moon first, k?

Then maybe if we can ***BUILD*** on the moon.

      Who wrote this report?

      Donald Gump?

I mean, this was inevitable, you’d be foolish to think human expansion into space didn’t also mean Lunar, Martian, O’Neal Cylinder bases. If it wasn’t us, it would’ve been the Chinese, and may very well be the Chinese, depends on how fast things move.

And this is the main reason I was against the space force creation in the first place. If you create a space force you have to create space wars….wouldn’t want anybody not having a job, and contractors for military hardware in space…have to keep them fed too

    13. vossmanspal on

They can’t even put active duty troops in Iran, the moon is a huge stretch.

Elon Musk must be loving this. I’m sure he’ll use the profits to help out the American public, since he’s such a good guy and all.

    15. Its just more grift for the weapons industry/military industrial complex. When will Americans grow tired of the tail wagging the dog. Literally every military misadventure the US has gotten itself into since WWII has been a profit driven exercise to pilfer the US tax coffers and appease this ghoulish industry. Trillions of dollars spent killing people, destroying things and destabilizing countries around the world, that could have instead been spent educating every single citizen and providing health care from cradle to grave.

    16. Great, we get to live through the MACO years of Star Trek. Fucking figures.

Ahhahahhahhah this is too funny. America couldn’t put troops in Iran without getting into trouble. I think the moon is a tad more difficult 🤣

    20. Why have troops all the way out there? Unless they’re WANTING to get started on space battles, theres no actual point to having troops so far away, logistics nightmare

    21. field_marshmallow on

i mean, that’s not *necessarily* as bad as it sounds, it could just be a classification, like how China had basically all advanced aero and space be run under the military for the longest ti….

      > for defensive operations against China’s alleged military-focused space initiatives.

      oh for *fucks* sake

    22. betweenbubbles on

I understand this is not what anyone wants to focus on but I do not understand how someone could be so indignant about it as to assume or insist that somehow, magically, the Moon would be different than any other location humans have occupied.
