Pope Leo XIV quoted Gandalf from „Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in his first encyclical:

      > “It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till.”

    2. If only there was someone he could quote in these hard times. I guess Gandolph knows best.

Awesome. Now, if he could make a bold statement about Trump, Corruption, and fake Catholics/Christians that would be awesome

    4. Wish they’d say he’s quoting Tolkien. A real person wrote Gandalf’s words.

    5. I didn’t read all of the LOTR books and the 2 I did read were a long time ago.

That does feel like an expansion on the Gandalf from the first book „All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.“

The church probably had the same kind of problem with the printing press, telephone, flight, television, and the computer when they came into existence.

Tolkien would be marking the hell out at the thought of a Pope quoting his works

I feel like this is a direct yet subtle shade at Peter Theil given 1) the focus of the speech is AI 2) He named his AI company Palantir after an evil weapon 3) Theil is a Catholic and a part of the evil Opus Dei sect and was rumored to have lobbied against Leo.

    9. Dream scenario for Stephen Colbert. Why do we get this right after he went off the air?

I’m not even catholic, but if the pope calls me to an intifada against AI, I’ll be there

    11. Now I’m curious, do popes release statements in their native language? Surely it gets translated – what does a Tolkien quote get translated to – word for word from a previous translation of the book?, or do they do a new translation and miss out on the reference?

    12. It’s very tiring listening to people with give their opinions on something they likely know very little about.

AI is just the product, the poster child of Capitalism, maximum profit for minimum effort and downsizing human costs, and Capitalism not only does destroy the world in which it itself thrives but on it’s very own consumers, how is the economy gonna flow when only top PHD Cyber-mathematicians of Techbronia are the only ones who have disposable income?

Pope Leo knows how to write a letter apparently. That feels targeted and also very apt.

About someone with authority starts talking about this. Trump got bought off in exchange for power.
