Half the schools don’t have strong enough walls to support an AC unit.

Zero chance of it getting installed in schools. Far too costly and most schools would leak the cold air like a sieve anyway.

The standard „there’s no money“ answer will be given by the custodians of the 6th largest economy in the world.

Best we can do is quadruple lock and mandated kidney donation from under 18s to over 80s

i used to do the air con in a retirement home. they never used it. literally never. got pictures of the air filters that we dated every service going back to like 2016 on the same filter.

Climate campaigners really need to decide whether they’re pro or anti air conditioning

We should also atleast let boys wear shorts at school

Seriously i do not understand why its even a thing that boys cant wear shorts and must overheat in trousers for no reason

I doubt it will be long before my dad orders a portable air conditioner and drags it in to his classroom. It will be the catering sized toaster and mini fridge fiasco all over again.

My school used to had heating they couldn’t turn off in the summer, it was bad.

    11. Fitting AC is treating the symptom not the problem. These sort of buildings should have full HVAC systems to provide temperature controlled fresh air all year round

Headmasters/mistresses that run their schools like they’re a FTSE100 company wind me up, telling kids what they can and can’t wear on a red hot day because they want their students to look like recent MBA grads. Having a school uniform to reduce pressure on parents finances is fine but let them wear polo shirts and shorts in the summer if they want to.

    13. If they give a „no money reason“ then I guarantee if they start a public fundraiser with 100 donations going towards supporting this then it would happen

Ditto hospitals. My heart goes out to anyone trying to recover from surgery or give birth in this heat

I would have a strong bet on 90% of every school having AC but just in the heads/ admin office area

    16. Deaths by climate have dropped something like 99% in last 100 years but this isn’t likely to save many/any. Not completely against it but when so few have to pay for everything already we really should be spending only on absolute priorities.

    17. Our school had Aircon in the computer lab, god did I relish those lessons in the summer

This is actually a good idea.

Install AC and then children can go to school throughout the summer. Cut school holidays in summer to 2 weeks.

Children will have daylight to travel safely and to enjoy extracurricular activities with their friends instead of staying at home all summer with nothing to do in their local areas because of so many cuts that even public libraries are turned into social housing.

Schools can then have much longer breaks over the winter when it is dark and dangerous to travel when there is torrential rains, or ice or snow and this will cut heating bills for schools which would be a lot more than running AC (given the high temps come and go rather than having constant cold weather in the winter)

They could flip exams into the winter months or into autumn or spring.

It’s not fair on students or their teachers when half the class has hayfever during exam season so underperform.

I have two family members who work in care homes, one as a carer, the other as a cleaner.

There’s a bit of a tug-of-war around climate, the residents, since they are old, are pretty much always cold. Today, which was boiling, the residents had the heating on full blast complaining it was too cold.

The staff however, find these conditions unworkable and honestly too harsh. My family members regularly report staff passing out.

But of course the managers sit in a cozy air conditioned room while the staff work their ass off in the boiling heat while planning their monthly meeting where they repeatedly bash the carers.

My classroom, teacher, gets very hot. Like in winter I don’t put the radiators on because the sun + children is enough to get it up to temp. Without children today or was about 36 degrees. It’s an absolute joke lol

    21. Especially nursing homes with a high number of bedbound residents. It’s a necessity.

You can buy a window unit from Curry’s for less than 300 quid or 400 for more BTUs. Yeah it’s not cheap but let’s stop pretending you need to spend £2000 on a split system.

    23. Kids cope with whatever the weather, plus the way people are going on its like this has been going on for months not days!
