With Canada recently joining the European SAFE program I’m less confident that Hanwha will win the contract. However, with Canada also trying to foster a closer relationship with it’s Pacific allies who knows. Maybe Ottawa will go with Hanwha for the subs and Europe for it’s air force and armor needs.
Hanwha has been on a serious streak with defense exports. the K9 howitzer deals in Europe, the Redback IFV in Australia, and now this. Korea’s defense industry went from basically zero international presence 20 years ago to competing at the top tier. if they land the Canadian sub contract that would be a massive statement.
