NATO exists because of WWII. the Soviet Union did participate in the war as allies with the west but it because only because Hitler broke their deal and attacked them anyway. The Soviets weren’t invited to join NATO because of fundamental differences. They were seen more as potential aggressors rather than friendly allies. NATO was created with the idea that the Soviet Union was the most likely country to attack one of their neighbors in a war of conquest.

Russia inherited the majority of the weapons from the Soviet Union and they also inherited the mindset. Putin would like for his legacy to have been the leader who restored the former Soviet Union.

I’ve always thought that the war in Ukraine was the most important conflict since WWII. The former Soviet Union was attempting to rise again. It’s always been in NATOs interest to support Ukraine. Allowing Russia to strengthen itself is strategically a bad move for the long term security of Europe.

Zelenskyy deserves to be at least heard at every meeting of NATO.

Ukraine is a better NATO ally than Turkey is, and Ukraine isn’t even in NATO…
