I think Japan isn’t living up to its side of the bargain here.
I understand they want less immigration, and the immigrants that do come here have to learn the language, cultural etiquette, etc. And that’s all well and good, but you cannot ask for us to put in the effort to integrate then allow for this sort of behavior.
My responsibility is to learn and do my best in regards to your society, rules, and language.
Your responsibility is to acknowledge that effort and take steps to insure that discrimination and harassment aren’t a problem.
The increasing anti-foreigner rhetoric in media, online forums, and from cynical politicians will predictably result in some people, typically the mentally unwell (at first), to “take matters into their own hands”. When entire minority populations are labeled a “problem”, then some people look for solutions.

I want to know what happened. Did the man get arrested? Was he asked to leave? I called an elderly man who spewed abusive racial language at me キチガイ before, and he reeled back, clutching his pearls, immediately transformed into the victim.

Incident in question happened several months ago. Can’t read the full article since its behind a paywall, but I hope the kids are OK and this guy was arrested.
If Japan was serious about reducing discrimination, they would pass laws bringing harsher punishment for hate crimes. There are none.

I lived in Kyushu in the late 90’s. There were a quite few times old men, especially when they were drunk in the afternoon, would come up and say crazy shit. Kids do not deserve that treatment but crazy old men do stupid things sometimes.
