      I naively assumed there would be a net financial benefit to Canadians. But unless you’re in a host city, nothing accrues to Canadians except expense.

      So FIFA is charging what, roughly a thousand bucks a ticket? (Assuming there are many tickets under a thousand bucks a pop, but also a good number of expensive VIP tickets pulling the average up)

      So probably $30-$60 million gates for each game in Canada. Probably in the range of half a billion dollars of ticket revenue for FIFA for Canada’s 13 games, give or take.

      So with that kind of money they are taking out of the pockets of fans, we STILL have to kick in a billion dollars on top of that?

      Fuck are we stupid. We are getting robbed but because there’s a soccer trophy involved everyone just happily goes along with it.

      I’d rather that 1B go to local sports leagues like hockey clubs and soccer clubs. This is fucking dumb man, our local sports clubs are struggling and yet we fork 1B we’ll never get back to host some corrupt rich people’s only event. Imagine 1B going to sports leagues, it’d be an insane injection of equipment for our kids.

      The math is kinda crazy.

      There’s only 680,000 tickets being sold in Canada for the World Cup and the average price is $1,000.

      So even if all the money from the tickets went to the government (which none of it does) it wouldn’t cover all the costs.

      Personally I would rather that money go to our overcrowded hospitals, but I guess a few games of soccer are more important.

      This is a ridiculous amount of money considering WE DID NOT BUILD ANYTHING for this World Cup.

      Naturally it’s complicated and complex but considering I’ve seen estimates of around $3-4billion in revenue being generated this is still probably a good investment for the country. I was around for the 2010 Olympics and there was lots of controversy over the spending as well, as yes it wasn’t perfect and didn’t work out well for absolutely everyone, but the city badly needed a lot of that infrastructure investment and I think it really benefited the city in the long run.

      That is only the Federal costs. Tax payers will also be covering the Provincial and Municipal costs, so the true number is probably at least 2x higher – if not more.

      I really don’t get why it’s going to cost that much. The games aren’t much bigger than a CFL game, or a Sky dome concert. why can’t we handle the crowds the same way we routinely handle those?

      A billion dollars would pay for a lot; Doctors, Nurses, Teachers, mental health facilities, veterans benefits……..what a grotesque waste of our money.

      It’s nice that after all we’re spending, we at least get a few games in prime time or weekend time slot….well okay, at least there’s one…

      …so we have ALL our games on weekday afternoons???

      They could save $3-4 billion by not making federal employees commute into the office every day and sell off the real estate portfolio.

      What’s the expected net revenue though? There’ll be a jump in tourism, travel, hotel, and restaurant income, of which the government gets a cut.

      So the real question is – we spend $1B, do we get $2B back? or $0.5B?

      And honestly even if it’s the latter, $500M is not a lot of money, it works out to like…$1 per person.

      Watch the Habs win the cup around the week of the games, and nobody in Canada give a fuck about soccer… loll Because when you look at the schedule that’s completely possible.

      I’m just kind of curious, are these net new costs? Like when they discuss policing and security, it’s not as though 1,000 new officers are hired and paid for the duration of the games, isn’t it just the allocated cost of the existing police force whose salary is already in the city’s budget? In other words it’s not a new cost that is incremental to existing expenses, it’s more the calculated cost or proportion of existing expenses. I think the net financial impact ultimately will depend on how much money comes into Canada from outside the country, through visitors flying here, paying airport fees, staying at hotels, shopping, and eating out. I also hadn’t heard that 100% of the gate revenue goes to FIFA before. Hopefully there’s a percentage that goes to the arena owner (which in the case of Vancouver is PavCo, a government crown corporation) to offset operating costs. I suppose 100% of concession revenue goes to the arena owner, so that’s a plus.

      I love the people comparing Olympics to the WC, you’re like comparing the size of an ant to an Elephant. It’s not in the same league. People in this sub have no idea the pull WC has as if the city business/hospitalities/transportation/etc won’t benefit.
