Without CBS unceremoniously ousting him from The Late Show, Colbert said he’s not sure when he would’ve departed on his own. “You can’t do this forever. You have to think about it, ‘Well, when is the right time to end your tenure?’ I didn’t think this soon,” Colbert, 62, told People on Tuesday.

“Who knows? Maybe CBS saved my life,” he said, “because it takes a lot of bone marrow to do the show every day.”

    2. I dont know why but i find him so unlikable and this feels like he is coping so hard. I want to like him but he comes off as such a pompous know it all. He seems like a good person but he is at times quite unlikable. Its quite odd to be honest.

    3. This show isn’t over yet? It feels like it’s been 84 years since it was canceled.

He should do what Jon Stewart has been doing and host The daily show once a week or bring back the Colbert report.

    5. Oh because the show is hard. I thought he meant he gonna be a target for MAGA crazies.

He has the audience and reach to do an incredibly successful independent YouTube show

    7. Letterman was gone for about 30 seconds before he started „My Next Guest“. Leno left, came back, left again and is still on television. Ferguson is still doing game shows a decade later. Jon Stewart came back.

Besides Conan, you can check out anytime you’d like, but you can never leave.

Part of me will be sad because Stephen has been a constant tv presence to me since I was 13. In the same thought though he has a staying power and audience he’ll be around awhile so it’s sad but not the end.

I bet he’d make a half decent President.

It turns out literally any idiot can do the job, so why not him?

    10. I just remember him doing that embarrassing covid dance. He’ll take that to the grave lmao

    11. I’m sure he and his staff see how many people watch clips from YouTube of his show versus the actual show.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he does a podcast or online show much like Conan did

    12. How would a Stewart / Colbert 2028 democratic presidential bid go?

(I’m not American, so I don’t have enough of a grasp of the zeitgeist)

Honestly i’m a big fan of Colbert but i don’t like talk shows and i’m excited to see what awesome projects this frees him up to pursue!

The fun thing to think about is Stephen Unchained. Let the dude start saying what he *actually* thinks, he might end up President.

I can’t say I will go out of my to subscribe to whatever he does next, but if he does something that I already access to or YouTube or a podcast, then I’ll be subscribing

    16. Letterman was 68 when he left late-night. He says he stayed on probably 10 years too long. Leno was 64, I believe, while he left kinda having a pity party, how he’s still #1 if I remember correctly, but he later admitted he was getting too old for the job. Conan was 58 or 59 when his show ended.

Colbert is getting out at pretty close to the right age. He had a good run. I do wish it had stayed on until the end of the next election tho.

I will say I don’t think we need 3 late-night hosts doing the same kinda show from the same point of view at 11:30 these days, it’s just unfortunate the best of 3 imo is leaving.

    17. Colbert was best on the Colbert report and when he was on the daily show.

The late show Colbert is just an establishment hack.

I’m glad he’s upbeat but it feels like sour grapes to me.

He could quit at any time at his own choice. Having the decision taken from you is hard to see as a true positive.

I expect he’ll do a lot of good and funny stuff now that this show is over. The show wasn’t a millstone, but it also was taking the place of some other possibilities that he might be able to do more with.
