    1. „AI license plate cameras“ … okay, that doesn’t sound like a reliable use of AI with a healthy low false positive rate

**Correction**: Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) have been in use for several decades. The actual issue here is privacy concerns, not accuracy.

It’s always unimaginably cruel at first, when techno fascism is being brutally forced upon society.

It’s unimaginably cruel later too, but also at first.

      >Mayor Carmella Mantello, flanked by officers in blue, accused the city council of “defunding” the police and declared a state of emergency to keep the cameras running, a designation usually reserved for floods and blizzards.

Sounds like the city is now under an autocracy

    4. Just a friendly reminder that you don’t need AI to read license plates from an image with a computer. The technology has been around for a very long time.

    5. Y’all need to be like montana an make red light / speed trap / etc cameras illegal.

    6. “I will not put this city in jeopardy..” and take away these cameras we have had for last two years. For time immemorial before these cameras were installed we lived in fear and we will not go back. /s

    7. So typical of a republican… I don’t care what the citizens want, I am doing this for your „security“.

    8. Flock Safety camera errors and misread license plates have led to police detaining, wrongly citing, and arresting innocent individuals.

The automated license plate readers (ALPR) can misread characters on a plate, matching innocent drivers with vehicles involved in crimes or felony warrants. When officers fail to verify the camera’s read against the physical vehicle or the driver’s details, it can result in wrongful stops, jail time, and even police dog attacks.

Notable incidents highlighting these system flaws include:

      * **Wrongful Detention in Washington:** A father in Redmond was handcuffed in his driveway after a Flock camera misread his license plate and incorrectly linked his vehicle to his son’s felony warrant.
      * **Incorrect Suspect in Colorado:** A woman in Columbine Valley, CO, was accused of porch theft and issued a summons after police relied solely on Flock camera data that incorrectly flagged her car. She had to provide her own Google Maps and dashcam evidence to prove her innocence and get the charges dropped.
      * **Systemic Misreads:** Reviews of police records and lawsuits by outlets like *Business Insider* have identified over a dozen instances where automated misreads or a lack of human verification resulted in the wrong individuals being targeted by law enforcement. 10. I went to college in Troy. Never imagined the locals cared enough to do something positive like this. Good for them.

    11. The potential abuse by insiders is huge.

Feeling sorry for Troy to have their town taken over by a rogue Mayor.

It’s also extremely easy to hack.

Benn Jordan has a series about how insecure their network is.

Also lots of incidents of their employees accessing camera to watch children or ex’s.

On one hand, I feel like car drivers feel waaaay too entitled in breaking the law, creating unsafe conditions, and demanding infinite funding for more roads.

On the other hand, fuck Flock and fuck mass surveillance systems

    14. My town had an agreement that flock couldn’t share the info with federal gov or outside agencies without permission and guess what happened, they gave trump admin access. So they took them all down and told them to go Flock themselves.
