Perfect time to capitalise on the current, historical low fuel prices.

Commercial service on the Concorde never paid back its development costs.

How long to get to Pearl Harbor?

Why would anyone in Japan want to do that, in any amount of time?

Redditors are such doomers and pessimistic, this comment thread is a great example of that. Like, touch some grass folks.

How do they adress the expanding and shrinking fuselage?

Love the Reddit wisdom of “it’s doomed like the Concorde!”, while completely ignoring how this tech is fundamentally different and has pretty significant defense applications.

Looks like it’s still very early in development, they’re aiming for 2040 release. The crazy part is thst assuming the two hours means a flight from Tokyo to the west coast, a connecting flight to the east coast would take longer than your flight across the Pacific.
Looking at the concept though I hope the plane can carry more than just a handful of passengers or else the ticket prices are going to be astronomical. Granted that’s how Concord was too so it wouldn’t be surprising, but I’m guessing this will really only be an option for people who normally fly first class on international flights.
But damn, this would be a game changer for international travel. You could get to Australia in a few hours from the US or Europe instead of the current ~24 hours it takes.

Just needs a speed racer logo on it.

You’ll still waste quite a few hours in the airport, either pre-flight checking in then going through security etc, or after landing waiting on baggage or passport control.

TIL that going fast is hard „Parts of the aircraft would face temperatures of about 1,000 degrees Celsius as air is compressed,:

thats insane time saving from an +18 hour trip depending on conditions. how am i going to read my book or play my steam deck?! when you’re settled in and having a snack then a short nap you’re already arriving. crazy
ive been on long flights with stupid crying babies the entire way so shorter time helps A LOT.

There ain’t no emergency landing on this.

I mean, cool, To me the main question is the practical reality.
The engineering was solvable decades ago, that e.g. wasn’t the problem for Concorde and a bunch of other projects were cancelled for reasons other than feasibility. It was cost, regulation and low passenger/fuel efficiency.
That said kinda in hindsight strange Concorde never tried to serve the Pacific routes. Large ocean with no civilization complaining about noise pollution sounds great.
But maybe range and passenger count back then did not suffice

I wonder how much a ticket will be, 10k plus?
