    1. Honestly I hope the UK eventually rejoins the EU.

Brexit was sold as this historic opportunity but for many people it has mostly brought economic problems, political division and years of exhausting arguments. Europe feels stronger when countries cooperate closely on trade, security, science and global challenges instead of cutting themselves off from each other.

By this point I’ll vote for anyone who will take us back into the EU.

Oh god. I voted Remain but I’m not sure this is the right thing to do right now given how divided the country already is.

I’m also not a fan of Starmer either but this could just trigger a merry go round of leaders like we had with the Tories. We need stability in the UK for a decade or so before big decisions.

I would be in favour in joining in the long term, but I also voted Plaid Cymru who want an independent Wales in the EU. I would currently favour much closer ties but another eu referendum would be too much at the moment.

That might necessitate repealing much of the anti-LGBT+ legislation that current Labour has put into law.

Would they have the courage to get that done? Somehow we doubt it.

I think that having one more state pushing their weight for concessions and a non-federal European agenda is the opposite of what the EU needs. I am sorry I think the UK should stay out of the EU and I think EU citizens should be asked about this.

    6. Considering how many people apparently favour reform I’m not sure how popular rejoining is. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear most people in the UK still don’t think Brexit is a big reason for their problems, and even if they acknowledge it they probably blame the EU.

    7. I voted leave & regret that decision we have gone from having a seat at the table to our nose pressed up against the glass looking in

All these different leaders is no good for anyone, KS is a boring dull man but I think that’s just what we need

Farage and his backers just want disorder, the last thing they want is unity. So having Labour internally fighting about reJoining is superb for them. The last thing Farage and his backers want is Starmer diligently going about his business, because it might well result in some progress, a better life for poor people and some national unity. Then an actual ReJoin.

Putin does not want a successful Europe, he wants fraction.

    9. As someone who voted Remain and has never regretted doing so, we need to move on.

And frankly this is a move that is likely to turn even more people away from Labour and towards Reform because a lot of people (regardless of how they voted) also want to move on from this

    10. Catchy but this guy is awful.

His views on the NHS are abhorrent, especially for a LABOUR MP.

I 100% agree but think Streeting is just saying this because he knows everyone on the left is skeptical of him and see him as worse than Starmer. It may be his actual view but comes across like any other Streeting sound bite: a tactical move not a conviction.

I don’t know if UK do so as a member without special status like implementing the Euro instead of pound. They would want the same status and benefits as before they quit. And I don’t think that would work.

    13. i get the impression wes streeting represents wes streeting’s ambition and nothing else.

Wes fucking Who? Yet another career politician willing to add yet more instability to the country for a chance at the top job. Not like there are two wars going on or anything.

Also, in principle yes but trying to rejoin the EU would almost guarantee a Farage led reform government for at least a decade.

    15. Unless it could return on the same terms, then it wouldn’t be worth it for the UK. Especially not as a nation that will again be a net contributor.

    16. Front-Possibility316 on

I am a huge remainer, I think brexit was a totally avoidable catastrophe and has harmed the UK immensely.

I also think that the UK’s natural position in Europe may not be in the centre of the EU. We risk coming back in only to repeat our mistakes and destabilise solidarity within the EU. I think everyone is warming to the idea of a Swiss or EEA arrangement. If we spend some time on the fringes and the desire and consensus for closer integration continues to grow then we should rejoin as a full member with few opt outs on major issues like Schengen.

His words are fine, but this politician isn’t credible. He looks like a poor choice for the next leader of the Labour Party.

    18. More populist idealistic bs, saying what people want to hear. The best think about Starmer is he was realistic about what he could achieve. People didn’t like it as he promised too little compared to others.

    19. Defiant-Sand9498 on

The rejoin issues isn’t a labour party leadership choice to make, it’s a seeing what the rejoin terms would be from the eu, then a referendum to the nation

      >Wes Streeting: I’ll stand for Labour leadership – and Britain must rejoin EU

That statement just cost Labour it’s remaining pro brexit working class voters and handed a boost to Reform; just before a by election where Reform is going to be a major competitor as they won every candidate that they stood in that area like a week ago.

I’m trying to figure out if he hasn’t figured that out and so is stupid, or if he has figured that out and is ***trying*** to cost Andy Burnham the byelection.

    21. Scared-Room-9962 on

He’s absolutely delusional if he truly believes he’s the man to lead this nation

    22. win_some_lose_most1y on

If you expect this to translate into actions or policy you are dreaming. both Streeting and Burnham will say anything to get elected.

    23. BenButton123 on

It’s hilarious that Labour are about to contest a Northern England seat, that sways heavily for Reform and they’re talking about rejoining. How have these people not learnt anything in the last 10 years? Part of me thinks he’s doing it to screw Burnham.

    24. MercantileReptile on

Ah yes, Wes „let’s make temporary blocker chicanery permanent“ Streeting. For some reason a Labour member. The very first act of this dude established the sheer assholery by which he seems to operate.

    25. I wish people could just move on. The EU is not having us back any time soon. The best way forward is closer trade agreements.

Brexit is not the disaster you are being told it is. Ultimately time will tell. There is no way the UK will have another referendum. We would have to negotiate the terms first. Otherwise we would have no idea what we are voting for…
