Helen is a FICTIONAL CHARACTER
More idiots talking about a fictional character as if she’s real
Helen of Troy was a loud typa sista!
She makes complete sense as Helen and they can stay mad too. I’m definitely seeing this in theaters
The biggest descriptor of Helen of Troy is she needs to be beautiful. Full stop. It’s the major characteristic. Anything else is secondary for the character, as it’s fictional and we just need the main point to drive the war
Lupita fits the criteria. We know she can give a great performance as an actress. On every logical level, it’s a non issue
People having major issues should just say the quiet part outloud already. This outrage is too blatant
The casting feels like when you get a local production of a play and they just cast whomever can do the job, race be damned.
Suany Hostin is an idiot.
Well, they’re all idiots.
And Jesus was white. Sure. Sure.
“Don’t know history”
It’s not history!
Helen was described as beautiful.. there is nothing in her description that’s says what ethnicity SHE WOULD NEED to be.. just that SHE is.. as in SHE EXISTS..
lupita IS beautiful and fits the character fine!
It’s really sad that the racist opinions about the casting have taken away from the real problems of the movie. Mainly, why couldn’t you show period accurate armor. It’s so much more visually appealing, and gives me something to concentrate on since I know I won’t be able to hear any dialogue.
It’s a movie adapted from a made up story who cares?
The View is just a bunch of entitled dumb celebs, who cares?
All of this is a waste of time, who cares?
(Apparently me as I comment while taking a big dump)
They should’ve just cast a man if they wanted to be edgy.
The main aspect of the character is beauty, I have no idea how you can cast a black woman besides Tina Turner and call that beautiful.
I’m willing to bet the biggest complainers have a limited understanding of mythology.
I don’t care she’s black and it’s not like she’s unattractive, I just don’t think she’s a great person for being the most desirable woman in the world.
I’m not a typical get on the internet and claim everything is a racist dog whistle, but yeah getting up in arms essentially because a black woman will be described as beautiful does seem pretty dog whistley
I hope we can just stop feeding into this debate soon. We’ve had it again and again.
Just let people scream about it, they can feel whatever crazy they want about art and storytelling, pat them on the head and move on.
It’s tired and no one is changing their opinion and it just doesn’t matter. People screaming into the void to be heard.
My problem is they would be ok with an English person playing a potentially Greek person but not an African person
I never understood people who thought Africans could never exist in Europe, even Southern Europe.
Africa is literally *right there*.
These clickbait ‚controversies‘ don’t carry the weight that they used to.
I mean this whole controversy is totally contrived. First by Nolan since he’s obv trolling. Next by people who fell for it.
Muppet news flash: Diane Kruger wasn’t pretty enough to play Helen of Troy either in the previous movie Troy. And Lupita Nyong’o isn’t either. I don’t think this is a racial issue except to nut-bags.
2nd, Sunny Hostin needs to read up on her history. It’s one thing to say it is okay for a black actress to play Helen of Troy, but don’t dip into the weeds and try and say, well, the real Helen of Troy could have been black. That is not very unlikely. And for thousands of years of Greek Mythology that has never been inferred or mentioned. She was the daughter of Zeus. Are there any statues or works of art where the Greek’s showed that Zeus was black? Ah, no. And in works of art and statues for millennia Helen of Troy was always pictured as a light-skinned Greek woman.
These conversations get so dumb. Lupita Nyong’o isn’t **beautiful** enough to play the most beautiful woman of all time. Few women are.
She’s simply not pretty enough.
The discourse around this movie has been literally insane. Nolan just wanted to go out and make sword and sandals type epic and now all of a sudden it’s being politicized and scrutinized over “historical accuracy”. We can’t even enjoy a fantasy movie anymore without tearing each other’s heads off.
