I see we are being very loose with the word „controlled“

May as well mark Putins footsteps on the map too.

    2. The most interesting territory imo is Fort Ross in California. Though not sure if it was control or ownership of some sort (feel free to comment about it)

„Controlled“ is an expansive term. They technically controlled parts of California for years too.

    4. Russia has always been expansionist, it would be illustrative to compare this map to the original Muscovy. Yet England, France, Holland, Germany etc are branded as „colonialists“. You think the people in all those areas Russia expanded into welcomed them? You think they weren’t exploited? It would be one thing if Russia *stopped*, but they’re still doing it right this minute.

map shows Russia controlling Thrace. (in Greece).

I don’t think they ever controlled it.

(Greece annexed it off Bulgaria few years following WW1, Bulgaria had been given it by Ottoman Empire to enter WW1, & before WW1, it was controlled by Empire for over half a millennium).

Also worth mentioning, although for most of the time it was considered terra nullius, Svalbard/Spitzbergen/Шпицберген, which is currently under Norwegian Crown, had heavy Russian presence in XX century, with Russians being the majority on the archipelago, more than Norwegians or whoever else. Although, yeah, to label it on this map as controlled territory might be slightly disputable, I’m not that deep into the details, maybe there are some guys who know a bit more on this matter. But just as a cool story – here you go.

Before 20st century it was kinda a melting pot. Everybody was doing business here. Russians are disputing, as far as I’m concerned, that they in fact discovered the archipelago instead of Dutch. But again, you can read if you are interested

If you colored Djibouti (which is wrong and excessive) than you have to color New Guinea too 🙂

Also, could anybody tell the story behind the dot in Netherlands? Is it related to WWII? A bit confused here

I don’t like this cause the Alaska that Russia controlled didn’t really look like that. They had settlements on the coast and never tried to go inland. Also, I’m fairly certain that the had outpost much further south than Alaska.

Hey, it even remembered the Lordship of Jever (the red dot near Hannover)

Edit: I am mistaken, it does not include Jever. A literal Lordship of Russia which was in Germany (unsure why,  but it was).

    11. Ok-Tear7712 on

Wouldn’t have expected Russia to be included, I didn’t think they controlled that country

Why not include Mongola if you’re going to include the Napoleonic campaign and Istanbul of all things?

If Djibuti, then also Russian Fort Elizabeth.
      If Manchuria, then also Mongolia.

      +Svalbard

    14. Idk If someone asked about this, but Paul I was ruler of Maltese Order and Malta. I think he was de facto controller of the island, you may correct me if I’m wrong.

Also, Peter III was ruler of Holstein IIRC, but it wasn’t the same country, so I won’t say anything 😅

    15. If Napoleonic era occupations count, so should the post ww2 soviet occupation zone

And still they ended as poor shithole. Thats what we call fumble.

    17. I’ll tell you how Russian I am. I would not consider Suvorov’s Italian campaigns to be territorial control, maybe I am mistaken, but this is my opinion. About Djibouti, they’re idiots. Alexander III confirmed that the expedition had no official support.

      1. How about Spitzbergen?
      2. Why is Afghanistan such a mess?
      3. They controlled a bigger part of Iran somewhere during WW1 and WW2, You have noted the area controlled by the tsars of the 18th century (I think it was Peter and Elizabeth).
      4. I assume in Eastern Europe we’re mostly talking of where the Soviet soldiers were during WW2, not later Soviet influence and troopes, because then All of Czechia and Eastern Germany should be in red. (Albania and Yugoslavia also for that matter). But again, I assume that you mean occupation during WW2.
      5. You’ve missed the Ionian islands. Malta and Fort Elizabeth on Kauai are arguable.
      6. Russia has controlled and had expeditions in nowadays Mongolia and Eastern Turkestan (Uyghuria)
      7. Now if we consider Northern Italy as an area controlled by the Russians during Suvorov’s campaign, we should also consider their forces in Cuba during the Kuban missile crises, their troops of assistance in Angola, Mozambique, Ethiopia and Eritrea and other former socialist countries (Vietnam, North Korea etc.)

Full credit for Djibouti but only squiggle marks for Afghanistan?
