why am i seeing nothing but cruise viruses lately? has it always been like this??

    2. DoubtSubstantial5440 on

I will never understand the appeal of cruising especially on these mega cruises with huge numbers of people crammed together.

    3. Erhm is this a particularly bad strain of Noro virus? It’s a pretty common virus normally, and a 90yo dying from an illness that is known to lead to acute gastrointernal symptoms like vomitting and diarrhoea seems to be a bit excessive. (Edit for clarification: As reason for quarantining the whole ship.)

      Any medical professionals with input?

Edit 2: When this was first posted the article was very short and listed as „developing“ or „being updated“ or similar. It seems there’s more information now including some questions regarding if the death was related to Noro.

It’s getting to the point that buying your parents cruise tickets could be considered attempted murder.

Maybe the cruise ship industry just shouldn’t exit. Seems like it’s just a disease generating industry. Aside from being an environmental disaster

    6. I caught norovirus last year and I have never vomited and diarrheaed so hard in my life. It was 10 hours of pure torture I needed to be hospitalized for.

Idk. It’s not so strange that a 90 yr old would die. . . or die from Norovirus. What IS strange is, knowing it is Norovirus, that they quarantined 1700 people on the ship. . . So it begs the question. . .

    8. Is this a new case of a suspected Norovirus outbreak?

Wasn’t there another Noro outbreak on a cruiseship with 100 cases just days ago? Or is this the same cruiseship?

I am sure by now the cruise industry has done a lot of epidemiology on how the virus spreads aboard their ships. I wonder what the most common areas aboard are responsible for the most efficient spread? The buttons on the elevators? The galley cutlery? Were I to go on one of these cruises I would not want to touch anything.

    10. Man, I really do not understand why people like cruises when this is so damn common. Especially old people! Not only the viruses that make people ill, but the damn hoards of people offloading at tiny places! I was in Norway sat at a lovely restaurant and watched as a HUGE cruise ship pulled in. The passengers had to be shuttled from the ship to shore by little boats. I could see the queues on the ship. Then after we had explored and were walking back to our car I saw all the passangers queuing again at the quay to get back on. We had spent several hours enjoying ourselves and it seemed like all they did was queue!

    11. Man, i should book a cruise. I can’t wait to shit myself silly in new and exotic locations

    12. Quarantine for norovirus is an odd choice. It’s not an airborne disease and the way it spreads is… specific.

Wash your hands. Always, but particularly after using the bathroom. Also wash your produce and anything else you intend to eat without cooking

    13. I wanna go on a cruise! Norovirus can stay active on hard surfaces for like 2 weeks? Touch a doorknob, touch your mouth… ETA don’t even bother to wash your hands! I currently refuse to touch any surfaces in women’s bathrooms. I have seen far too many women just dabble thier little finnertips in the water and then touch the door.

My husband and I both got norovirus at the same time during covid. We had an 18 month old and no family support in the state.

That poor, screen-free child watched Totoro 3 times in a row while we alternated between the bathroom and a half-conscious state on the couch. Best day of his life, worst day of ours 🤣

At this point I think Cruise ships are just floating virus labs that happens to include a buffet.

They’ll quarantine this many people over a DmV disease

But then there is a virus with a 40% mortality rate and they go “let’s fly everyone back to their own countries and trust them to self isolate and mask!”

Man, get with the times. Hantavirus is where it’s at nowadays. Norovirus is sooo early-2020s.

    18. Living_Cash1037 on

Shit I got norovirus and Hanta mixed up for a second. Was freaking out for a minute

    19. cruises are floating toilets that everyone is exposed to at all times. they’re disgusting and this is incredibly common. For some reason, we care about everyday cruise happenings now?

if it bleeds; it leads, I guess

    20. Oh so you CAN keep people on a boat when an infectious disease kills people.

    21. kaisadilla_0x1 on

Did I miss anything? Norovirus outbreak are a cliché of cruise ships, never heard them even making it into the news; and that virus has nothing to do with Hantavirus.

    22. Welcome to post COVID health issues, where an infection that normally wouldn’t kill you, can.
