We did it gang, we stopped the ultra wealthy Chinese from getting an easy visa by making it only affordable to the ultra wealthy. That will show the small curry shop owners who is boss… wait, what were we doing?

    2. Why don’t they just remove the visa altogether then. They can celebrate a 100% decrease, and the possibility of misuse will become zero.

Someone ELI5 why this is a bad thing?

I generally agree with the Japanese government regarding this. This just sounds like a huge win to me…..

I don’t think Japanese voters understand that Americans can afford to repeatedly stab themselves in the leg because America has a wealth of natural resources and an extremely strong tech sector. Japan is highly dependent on imports, has collapsing demographics, highest debt to gdp ratio in the world, a stagnating economy, etc. They can’t afford to keep up the self-sabotage yet it’s only getting worse and worse.

Japan is „cooked“ as they say.

This is going to fuck over so many legitimate businesses, they are giving them 3 years to „comply“ and that means after 3 years and if they need to renew again and they don’t have 30 million yen they are out of the country and forced to close shop, that’s crazy considering this quote in the article: „According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, only 8.7% of all businesses in Japan have ¥30 million or more in capital.“

To me this just sounds like, „foreigners get out“, At least at the bottom of the article, it discuses that some people are petitioning for change, including Japanese.

    6. If people actually think the government will kick out the EASIEST ethnic group to scapegoat ever then they are idiots.

Yes, the 1% of your population that are on business manager visas (probably less?) is causing all the issues in Japan.

Next lets ban young people all together from entering the country and die out peacefully

    8. Out of the 46,000 people on this visa, 300 people were being investigated over not following the requirements 2023~2024. I.e. less than 1%…

So due to 300 people, who should’ve just been investigated and had their visa status revoked if found to not have met the requirements, the government decides to pull this stunt…

It’s speculated this is the visa PewDiePie used to set up residence in Japan. I’m sure he won’t have any trouble coming up with 30mil. On the other hand my friends English school is pretty much done unless he can change his visa.

    10. Will be interesting to hear their feelings on this issue in, say, a year or five.

They have 3 years to earn 30 million yen! The Jp goverment is giving a 3 years grace period to existing businesses in Japan.
So a company cannot earn 10 million yen per year? Then might as well close the business and become a salary man is better….
Let’s be real. It is not difficult to earn 10 million yen per year for a legit company.

The problem was allowing all these people to move to Japan to open little mom n pop shops. Most countries aren’t that generous with residency visas. So now we see the govt trying to right what THEY did wrong. And these small business owners are now being affected. Well, it is what it is. Party’s over! The number of applications also reflect how Japan is not the most attractive or popular country to invest in, apparently. I mean, the small application numbers are brutal and speak 1000 words!

The Indian guy ( restaurant owner ) whose been here 18 years. His kids were born and raised here.

He should have applied for permanent residency 8 years ago.
