Yea, Tokyo is very densely populated but the vast majority of California is either rural or uninhabited

GDP of Tokyo: $2.5T
GDP of California: $4.25T
Honestly, Tokyo’s numbers are impressive. But California’s numbers are simply ridiculous.

Not really that surprising, despite it’s size, US is quite barren in terms of population. UK alone has as many people as California and Texas combined. My city is relatively small by European standards, and has a population similar to whole Wyoming.
I’m surprised. I thought Tokyo would be more densely populated.

They’re talking about the Kanto area, not Tokyo proper.

Takes 3 hours to get one side of LA from the other. Tokyo.. you can do it in 45

Just… The map used to showcase Tokyo isn’t „Tokyo.“ Since it’s Grand Tokyo, minus the „Gunma Prefecture,“ the „Tochigi Prefecture,“ and the „Ibaraki Prefecture.“ BTW, Grand Tokyo is different than Tokyo metropolis/metropolitan gov., which, fun fact, thanks to some islands some of you might know, strech up to the Ogasawara Subprefecture (Iwo Jima, etc.; yes, you might know them as Bonin Islands…).

They build multi-unit housing and don’t have bad zoning laws that make it car centric. Also public transport. When the US actually cares about the people again and builds up our transit to match what it was before cars took over in the 50s, you will not only see traffic disappear, but literally every aspect of society will get just a tiny bit better.

It’s fascinating how LA manages to have much better weather and an even larger population & economic base yet still manages to be smaller by population simply because their entire state is dominated by boomers who keep wanting their property values to rise indefinitely by making housing more scarce.

Personal fun fact:
My childhood home to downtown LA (City Hall) = 40 km
My current home to central Tokyo (Nihonbashi) = 40 km
That’s all. 😄

Send this photo to anyone claiming California is expensive because a lot of people live there.

The population stats are wrong for CA, unless you go back around a decade. As of 2025, CA had a population of 39.3 million people.

Also isnt the collective land mass of Japan’s islands comparable to that of California

There’s a reason Tokyo has so many micro apartments.
