Trotz seines Namens war Eurovision nie ausschließlich auf Europa beschränkt. Im Laufe der Jahrzehnte hat sich der Wettbewerb zu einer der weltweit größten Unterhaltungsveranstaltungen entwickelt, die über die European Broadcasting Union (EBU) Länder aus ganz Europa und darüber hinaus zusammenbringt.
Während die meisten europäischen Länder weiterhin teilnehmen, haben sich einige im Laufe der Jahre aus ganz unterschiedlichen Gründen zurückgezogen oder wurden suspendiert: politische Streitigkeiten, finanzielle Schwierigkeiten, schlechte Ergebnisse, Meinungsverschiedenheiten mit dem Wahlsystem oder Kontroversen um die teilnehmenden Länder und Lieder. Russland und Weißrussland sind derzeit verboten, während andere wie die Türkei, Ungarn oder die Slowakei freiwillig ausstiegen.
Eines der am meisten diskutierten Themen der letzten Jahre war die Beteiligung Israels, was einige Sender und Zuschauer dazu veranlasste, zum Boykott oder zur Stimmenthaltung aufzurufen. Die Karte verdeutlicht, dass der Eurovision Song Contest weit mehr als nur ein Musikwettbewerb ist. Er ist zunehmend zu einem Spiegelbild der politischen Spannungen, kulturellen Debatten und internationalen Spaltungen Europas geworden.

Today, the Israeli government passed a law to allow the death penalty and public trials for those linked to 7 October. A death penalty exclusively for Palestinians.
Also today, Israelis will dance around on stage while millions of Europeans cheer on as if Israel hasn’t recently murdered thousands of children.
When does Palestine get to trial Israeli war criminals and sentence them to death? That will happen too, right?

False information in couple of cases: (make this pinned comment for visibility)
*Russia & Belarus – They are not banned, their membership is currently suspended.
Belarussian dictator did not recognise 2020 elections (he got defeated massively and forcibly stood in power) and tried to send a song mocking the protestors. Not allowed, so Belarus withdrew from the contest and their membership is suspended due to state-controlled media status.
Russia was not banned for 2022 contest. Huge number of broadcasters threatened to withdraw, so by pressure Russia did not join for 2022. EBU suspended their membership on May 2022, right after ESC 2022.
*Turkey – Not solely voting system, but also direct participation of Big 5 countries. After finishing 2nd in 2010, Turkish broadcaster expected automatic qualification for 2011 because Germany won (because of Big 4 + host makes it 5 slots), however Italy joined in 2011 and granted automatic qualification directly.
In 2011 semi-final, Turkey was 10th in televoting but eliminated by the juries. These two events made Turkey withdrew in 2012. It would have been 2011, but Azerbaijan won and Turkey had an obligation to a brotherly nation to participate in their contest. After that, no more.
* Hungary – Last participation was in 2019 and after that, Orban banned participation because „Eurovision is a freak show and not family friendly“. They are expected to return in 2027.
* Israeli participation – 5 countries withdrew this year (and possibly next year too), but they are not the only ones. Morocco only participated in 1980 because Israel was not there. Lebanon supposed to participate in 2005 but because they don’t recognise Israel they withdrew too. North African countries and Jordan etc. also don’t participate because of Israeli presence.
Finally looks like we’ve found a way for the UK to win … revert back to the Balance of Power doctrine until they all leave the competition 😁

I can’t understand how anyone could watch this in this year. This is not about taste, enjoy the music as much as you want, but about principles.
In Ireland the broadcaster have announced they are playing an episode of ‚Father Ted‘, an old comedy series about priests living on a remote island, in its slot. Specifically an episode where they poke fun at the eurovision

I personally like Eurovision as a Hungarian, but we REALLY felt **strong cultural favorism/chauvinism**. Our closest neighbours basically hate us and W-EU viewers don’t give a damn. You can clearly see how the different regions favor others, like the mediterranean countries favor each other and the nordic countries as well. The slavic countries and the germanic countries also favor their neighbours and we are all alone.
