Heute vor 86 Jahren wurde Luxemburg von Nazi-Deutschland überfallen. Das Land war nicht im herkömmlichen Sinne besetzt. Vielmehr wurde es dem Dritten Reich angegliedert. Dies bedeutete, dass junge Männer zum deutschen Militär eingezogen wurden und auf Arbeiter und Fachkräfte (insbesondere Lehrer, Beamte usw.) ein enormer Druck ausgeübt wurde, der örtlichen NSDAP beizutreten. Das erste Bild unten zeigt den Großherzoglichen Palast.
Wir wollen bleiben, was wir sind: Luxemburger Motto, früher geschrieben, aber sehr passend zu dem, was vor 86 Jahren geschah: "Wir wollen bleiben, was wir sind".

Actually, 86 years ago yesterday, it was on the 10th of May 1940 that Luxembourg was invaded and occupied by the Wehrmacht, whilst the Grand Duchess and the government (minus one minister who didn’t make it out in time) fled.

Lux is so rarely mentioned in WWII documentaries, it is so disappointing.

This is exactly why we need to keep talking about it – so many people are unaware of the specific tragedies Luxembourg faced. Among those often forgotten are the victims of the [Sonnenburg concentration camp](https://lb.wikipedia.org/wiki/KZ_Sonnenburg), where the largest massacre of Luxembourgers during WWII took place. It’s a devastating chapter that deserves more recognition in the broader history of the war.
