What an entitled take from my perspective, someone who started working in tech for minimum wage 2 months after high school finals 😃

I’ve worked with some of the most academically elite children in the country for nearly twenty years. This is an absolute dogwater article.

Parents who have the means to send their children to the best *juku* and the best schools also have the means to give them the best experiences. Impoverished children spend summer vacation at home on their phones or watching TV, while the affluent children often travel the country, go overseas, and join private sports clubs.

This whole 勉強勉強勉強 thing is a ridiculous myth, being honest, because while yes they study very hard, the overwhelming majority are also active outside of school. I cannot speak for the author’s experience personally, but acting like it’s some widespread thing seems disingenuous to me.

My wife was put non stop into cram school and no sports from second grade on. Her mother said it was a waste of time. Now my wife has a lot trauma from never being home. Her schedule was– Wake up, eat, school, juku, come home very late, eat, study, sleep. Everyday. She doesn’t have many memories of anything from her elementary – high school. She really hates her upbringing. She goes to therapy.
