**“It’s China”: Jean-Luc Mélenchon Stands Up for His Taiwan Policy**

*Appearing on LCI this Friday, the left-wing presidential candidate stated that “Taiwan is China,” calling on France to avoid conflict with the government of the People’s Republic of China.*

What position should France take regarding Taiwan? When questioned on this subject on LCI this Friday, May 8, Jean-Luc Mélenchon asserted that the island of 24 million inhabitants “is China.” The presidential candidate has already clarified the position France would adopt if elected: “There is a problem, and it is up to the Chinese to resolve it. We must intervene politely and respectfully, so that it is resolved peacefully. If they intervene, we will not get involved. If I am President of the Republic, we will never go to war with China.”

And then, turning to the military sphere: “To defeat China, you need at least 20 to 30 nuclear bombs… Therefore, we don’t have the balance of power that would allow us, if we were to imagine, to wage war.” According to him, “we must not have a colonial relationship with China. We are no longer in the 19th century. We must come to an understanding with them,” he insisted, explaining that he was thus following in the footsteps of Pedro Sánchez and Mark Carney, the Spanish and Canadian Prime Ministers.

Located in the South China Sea, Taiwan has been a focal point of tension since 1949. That year, Chiang Kai-shek’s Chinese government took refuge on the island after the revolution and founded the Republic of China with an autonomous administration and government. Since then, the People’s Republic of China, based in Beijing, has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan, considering it the 23rd province of the Middle Kingdom.

      **France Recognizes “One China”**

Since General de Gaulle, France has recognized “one China and the government of the People’s Republic of China as its sole legitimate government,” as Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot reiterated last December. Relations between France and Taiwan were severed for a long time, beginning in 1964, the year the General recognized the legitimacy of the PRC over the Taiwanese government. Relations have warmed since then, particularly since 2020, when Paris resumed supplying arms to Taipei.

However, France defends the maintenance of the fragile status quo established between Taiwan, China, and the United States since the 1980s, citing the need for “maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait.” While Xi Jinping has repeatedly emphasized the need for „reunification,“ which he believes will be achieved by force if necessary, France advocates for „maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait“ to preserve, among other things, prosperity in the region. In 2025, the PRC military intensified its military exercises in the South China Sea, with landing drills and repeated overflights of the island. Some experts even fear the militarization of its merchant fleet.

Spineless fuck positioning for the Chinese bot farms to help with his election campaign

    3. The official name of Taiwan is the Republic of China

Republic of China contains Taiwan and outlying islands such as Kinmen

    4. Not content just being pro-Russia, he decides to add pro-China to the list as well. Not to mention how he’s also anti-EU. Funny how his foreign policy is in lockstep with the National Rally

In academia, the notion of the „horseshoe theory“ has been getting more and more contested in favour of the „fishhook theory“, but my god, does Melanchon just desire to prove us wrong.

He’s running? Why? Why couldn’t LFI find a younger person for President? I would’ve understood that he decided to run for the assembly in hopes of becoming PM but President? He ain’t gonna do as well as he did in 2022 probably like 15% at best.

    6. BitterSeat2253 on

Taiwan is a province of China, either Republic of China or People’s Republic of China.
Prove me wrong if you disagree.

Edit: seems like nobody in this sub dare challenge my point. All they can do is just downvote me. Pathetic when all of them talk like they have the moral high ground.

    7. Unlike Russia, this doesn’t matter. China isn’t an adversary and we benefit nothing from following America’s opposition to them. „Not our problem“ would be a better thing to say though.

    8. In fact he is kind of right as France only recognized one and one only China, since the 60’s. It’s very recently (2020) that some ties was set, notably to align themself with the US that opened some lucrative deals with Taïwan for the french military industrial complex and a foot in the microchips challenge. And Melenchon party is not okay with the US alignment.

But, yeah.. Giving that the whole political spectrum -and most of the billionaires owned french main media-  in France try all they can to kill this old fart (fearing mostly his hard left economical program) it was another not very subtle, or even dumb, move.

    9. SassyRoleplayer on

Just plain wrong. Why are so many lies spread against him? He said its up to the Chinese to solve it, not that Taïwan was Chinese. Also official French policy is to not recognize Taiwanese claims for obvious economic reasons.

When I come here it just feels like I read some reactionary right winger bot farm. Keep reading misleading titles that you agrees with.

Left wingers seem oddly enamored of dictatorship and imperialism globally it seems

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the man who tends to get angry quickly, has been seen behaving aggressively towards his own voters, vociferating phrases like „Republic is me“ or „My person is sacred.“

A totally balanced guy so, naturally able to be the next french president…

What people see in Mélenchon is beyond me. It’s hard to find a more odious figure on the left.

Europe needs to stop making foreign policy partisan one day it’s a strong pro west pro EU pro NATO guy and the next day the other candidate cozies up to dictators like Putin and Xi

Why are people here completely falling for the US/EU propaganda about China and Taiwan?

Our state media just yesterday made a piece about taiwan and claimed that they want to be independent while only letting ex US military talk. The majority opinion in Taiwan is actually „keep status Quo“, which means they are neither independent from nor controlled by China.

China isn’t threatening them either. They explicitly say that the reunion they seek is not militarily. Meanwhile some forces from the west try everything to get them into another proxy war against China.

Feel free to downvote because it offends your strong believes you got programmed by the mainstream media.

Just want to point out that never in human history there is a country called Taiwan. Not even in Taiwan’s internal law or official declaration. It’s always Taiwan Province of  Republic of China or People’s Republic of China

    16. Melenchon’s modus operandi in foreign policy is hating the West and supporting every regime that is „socialist“ coded, no matter how vile it is.

And our Tankies will never not cheer for it.

    17. > When questioned on this subject on LCI this Friday, May 8th, Jean-Luc Mélenchon stated that the island of 24 million inhabitants „is China .“

      > The presidential candidate has already clarified the position France would adopt if elected: „There is a problem, and it is up to the Chinese to resolve it. We must intervene politely and respectfully, so that it is done calmly. If they intervene, we will not get involved. If I am President of the Republic, we will never go to war with China . “

People attack him here and call him tankie but Taiwan is China lol. Even Taiwan is not calling itself a different country but is claiming to be China and claims all of mainland China. It’s up to Taiwan to become a „different country“. Or up to China and Taiwan to deal with it (like today) and ignore the problem (more or less).

But if you want to follow international law, there is not much we can do. China is still in a civil war or Taiwan (and a couple other islands no one tells you about) is occupied by someone else. The only acceptable „way out“ would be international customary law but that demands that Taiwan gives up their claims. If we demand that Russia, Israel or the US are supposed to accept the rules based order, we cannot just make a special case whenever we want.

So he is right, it’s up to everyone involved to decide their fate. Not us. The only thing the West can do is to support (even with our ships) Taiwan after it becomes its own country for a while. So that China is accepting their decision. But what are the consequences for the people? If China would no longer trade or let the people work on the mainland, the island would get in massive trouble. We cannot force China to „open up the ports“ like 200 years ago. That’s why it must be something both sides can accept. The West cannot compensate China.
