My mother (American) said her generation wore hat pins. She always kind of smiled when she said that. Maybe hat pins are out of date, but how about long hair pins made from hard wood?
I knew an old international student support lady, she told the female students to keep a safety pin on them. Said she always did when she was younger. and while she doesn’t condone it, she clearly presented it as an option.
