“The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has reportedly launched a diplomatic initiative encouraging four additional countries to recognize the self-declared breakaway region of Somaliland in northern Somalia, according to Caasimada Online, which cited diplomatic and intelligence sources within the Somali federal government on Tuesday.
The alleged campaign, attributed to Emirati officials, is said to involve engagement with Eswatini, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, and Zambia. The reports suggest that Abu Dhabi is actively lobbying these governments to extend formal recognition to Somaliland, a move that would significantly escalate an already sensitive geopolitical dispute in the Horn of Africa.”

So why won’t UAE recognise Somaliland? You can already travel to the UAE on a Somaliland passport, yet it hasn’t joined Israel in recognising Somaliland.

Israel and the UAE are proving they are regional powers by actually spearheading the recognition of Somaliland

Wow UAE is completely under Israeli control. The only reason this is happening it’s because Israel wants „Somaliland.“ And by the looks of it, they might get it after all.

It’s important to know why Israel needs Somaliland, because it’s obvious that UAE is following Israel’s lead.

„As of 2026, this UAE and Israel partnership is characterized by deep defense cooperation (including joint air defense against regional threats), a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), and a visa exemption agreement—a high-level, „first-tier“ status“
What Arab country does this? Visa exemption agreement? Once you lift that, Israel owns you. Whether you know it or not, they have the upper hand.

UAE’s interest is likely related to Ethiopia. Ethiopia set this whole thing off last year as they sought a trade port. Just recently Ethiopia has tentatively backed the RSF. Since the SAF controls port Sudan this would be a round-about way to open up a supply and extraction corridor to Western Sudan.
I’m not sure if this is an escalation or a de-escalation of regional conflict. With other parties involved maybe it will legitimize it more.
Overall though the Sahel and the Horn are hot, wrong move and war with spread easily.
