[Turkey](https://inews.co.uk/topic/turkey?srsltid=AfmBOooa5ksdojNRp4J5GY4MiQTt6D4rJnOw7vQfbaZfAH6JBdIcS19l&ico=in-line_link) became the ninth country known to possess an intercontinental ballistic missile, with a surprise revelation at an arms show this week, raising alarm in [Israel](https://inews.co.uk/topic/israel?srsltid=AfmBOooehPGodRkavxshh2NI1ivsYlxI0SE0MvnOfWDxat9_RnUL9rhP&ico=in-line_link) at a time of escalating tensions between the two regional powers.

Turkish security specialists suggest much of this urgent development is happening with Israel in mind, following a series of devastating wars in the region and veiled threats from Israeli officials.

Tensions have erupted over Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. Turkey’s President [Recep Tayyip Erdoğan](https://inews.co.uk/topic/president-erdogan?ico=in-line_link) has compared Israeli prime minister [Benjamin Netanyahu](https://inews.co.uk/topic/benjamin-netanyahu?ico=in-line_link) to Adolf Hitler, while the Israeli leader has accused the Turkish autocrat of massacring ethnic Kurds.

Hawkish elements in Washington DC think the US could ultimately back an Israeli attack on Turkey, if tensions continue to escalate.

Nato membership is likely to be of limited value in that scenario, suggesting that other members might be reluctant to come to Turkey’s aid on the basis of Nato’s Article Five mutual defence pact.

I think Turkiye knows this. I think them being in NATO is one of the things that keeps it linked to the west, despite Erdogan increasingly taking control. I think they would not initiate a war, precisely because they know that that would ruin their chances of calling in NATO. However, I think the reverse it true as well. I think if Israel actually attacks Turkey straight-on unprovoked, Turkey would call in NATO and I think European countries would actually answer. They’ve been growing tired with Israel for a while now and that would definitely be a border Israel cannot be allowed to cross.

    3. This conflict seems like one that would be perfect to stoke if one were to be in the interest of the dissolution of NATO

How would Israel and Turkey get into a direct fight? And why would Israel attack turkey territory directly? I can see a more likely scenario where druze populated parts of Syria could be annexed into Israel, which would provoke Turkey and then maybe some kinda of proxy conflict. Regardless, Erdogan could find out the difference between having f35s with great experienced pilots vs not

Nato is a defensive alliance and turkey sees their relation with Israel as a conflict over regional influence. They would not involve NATO in this, they stand only to lose from that

    6. Turkey is actively doing anything they can to help adversaries to Israel like Hamas, spewing rhetoric that wouldn’t shame the Houthis, then act all surprised pikachu face when Israel is saying that they’re shaping up to be a rival.

Turkey is also trying to turn Syria into a client state, suppress Kurds, and try to get more and more influence in the Caucasus. They’re obviously going for regional influence, maybe even hegemony.

I don’t think there will be an actual confrontation, but it won’t be a truly peaceful relations either. NATO isn’t going to bomb Jerusalem, despite some’s wishes.

If Israel attacks turkey, nato attacks Israel, US attacks NATO, Russia opportunistically attacks NATO… this could be the beginning of a major conflict that would spell doom for Europe. It’s not a bad option for Israel to be fair, they should capitalise on the unequivocal support from Trump as much as possible while they have it and use US to destroy everything around them.
