      I don’t really see the issue? I’m all for communicating with customers in their preferred language in store, but I agree with the fact that official documents should be written in the language of the region.

      Realistically, how much can this be enforced? I guess they can fine them for not having signs, manual etc in Dutch (which i can understand with safety concerns and all), but talking with colleagues on the other hand?

      Het woord “Nederlands” lezen en meteen denken dat het wel politiek incorrect moet zijn 🤣.

      In Beersel en omstreken word je in de gemiddelde eettent aangesproken in het Frans. Dat is echt niet aangenaam hoor, dat geeft niet het gevoel dat je nog in Vlaanderen bent. Het is 1 van die dingen waarvan je achteraf als het te laat is denkt “ha ja, daar hadden we iets moeten aan doen van bij de start, nu is het te laat”.

      Ik zie hier niks verkeerd. Als mensen geen NL spreken kan je nog steeds verder gaan in het Frans na de NL begroeting. Denk je dat je in Wallonië in een winkel ooit in het NL wordt aangesproken? Nee? We vinden dat toch ook normaal? We verwachten toch niet speciaal dat ze aan onze kop zien dat we NL spreken? Ik snap perfect dat zij FR prefereren in hun eigen provincies. Omgekeerd moet daar ook niet overly-woke over gedaan worden.

      Oké maar spreek dan ook iedereen aan in het Nederlands. Ik zie vaak genoeg klanten aangesproken worden in het Engels als ze er een beetje anders uitzien of een andere huidskleur hebben (niet per se in Ninove maar op veel plekken in Vlaanderen). En de klant vraagt daar ook niet om 9/10 keer en wilt gewoon Nederlands spreken.

      Er staat niets onredelijks in. Alleen lijkt het nogal een verspilling van tijd en geld om een brief rond te sturen om te verkondigen dat je in je winkel best Nederlands spreekt tenzij de andere partij geen Nederlands verstaat.

      It’s not enforcable no, you can advertise in Arabic or french, but you know it will backlash sooner or later if you want or need something from the local authority.

      A few of things in this letter are things they cannot enforce anyway and giving the idea of enforcing it, could lead to potential lawsuits for overreach.

      tsja het is een advies, niets dwingends op zich. Als ze hier nu controleurs op gaan zetten en behalve deze brief ook nog eens geld tegen aan smijten is het een ander verhaal: niet de grootste prioriteit in Ninove, lijkt me.

      Oost Vlaams is vedrorie amper te verstaan, heel da t groot uitgevallen dorp mag zelf eerst een taalbadje ABN krijgen. 😂

      Racisme vermomd als „gewoon vriendelijk en normaal zijn“. Ninoofs bestuur is degoutant. Voor iedereen die zegt dat ze het probleem niet zien: het is al erg genoeg dat een gemeentebestuur (stad, lol doe me niet lachen) het nodig vindt om zich te moeien in welke taal mensen kiezen te spreken, dit richt zich puur tegen anderstaligen en nieuwkomers om hen het leven moeilijker te maken. In plaats van diensten te kunnen krijgen die ze misschien nodig hebben krijgen ze „spreek Vlaams“ te horen. Idem met buitenlandse collega’s die hun job moeten kunnen doen. Het is een pestmaatregel ingegeven door racisme.

      You know flemish is basicly the enforced language to speak at businesses in flanders right?
      My walloon boss who owned several gas-stations told me once to never speak french to a customer and if they refuse to speak in dutch I could refuse to help them as this is flanders ground.

      Here’s an idea: employees should pass around a little pebble every time someone speaks any language other than Dutch. Whoever has the pebble at the end of the working day gets fired.

      This system worked great on the playgrounds of our francophone schools in the 1900s. The issue was never the oppression, apparently; it was always about who got to be the oppressor.

      Bye bye tourism, bye bye startups. I work in Brussels, in a digital company, obviously we have people coming from all over Europe. They help the business grow, but they won’t always learn Dutch, French, or German for a couple years. We may all have our opinions about this, but no, you can’t always find a SQL Server DBA or a C++ developer speaking one of the 3 languages, and there is no reason to slow business‘ growth because of that.

      Now, of course, you must have the right to do your shopping in Dutch in your local street, but this letter isn’t asking for just that.

      It’s even funny that if you wanted to make an e-shop for some niche product covering whole EU, in English obviously, they say, meh you should do so in Dutch. (They state that all invoices must be in Dutch as an example)

      You’re free to think about this letter and VB what you want, but I invite you to look at how the linguistic border between French and Dutch has been creeping up during the last centuries. Both in France and Belgium (yes, people used to speak Dutch in French Flanders too).

      It’s easy to dismiss this letter as intolerant or not practical, but it’s not wrong for a people to want to avoid becoming a linguistic minority in their own region. I think that French is a beautiful language, but it should not dominate the native one, which is Dutch.

      Ik snap het probleem niet. Ninove ligt in vlaanderen, dat is niet veranderd in de afgelopen jaren. Je weet dus voor je gaat wonen of een winkel opent dat het in Vlaanderen ligt. De taal in Vlaanderen is Nederlands, ik zie dus niet waarom dit geen normale brief is. Als je graag frans of andere talen spreekt raad ik aan naar brussel of Wallonië te gaan. Dat is toch niet vreemd?
