For the LAST SEASON where everything needs to be wrapped up? Yea, kinda.
No let’s keep adding new characters and not tie up loose ends!

Dragon Ball Z had Goku powering up for how many episodes before he and Frieza actually fought and it was an amazing show. And that was him standing and yelling. This at least has story and character development.

If that’s not filler, idk what is.

The same thing happened with Preacher…they do a really great job when building on top of pre-existing stuff, and riffing, but every time these „based on a comic-book“ series deviates from the core plot trajectory of the source material, you can really tell. They wrote themselves into a corner very early.
It’s funny, Invincible is the only recent series to take just an award-winning series…and expose it to a larger audience without changing the source. It’s worked out.

Starlight mending the severe political divide with her alt-right brother over shared donut memories was pure cinema. I Cried. And then the Sister Sage scene where she lists off menu items from taco bell as well as the prices while eating crunch wrap supreme was pivotal plot development and anybody who doesn’t see that is an idiot with no eye for film. Next time i bite into a crunch wrapped supreme i will most likely cry again remembering kripke’s genius/absolutely uncompromising artistic integrity.

When Hughie and Annie, Frenchie and Kimiko, SB and Homelander keep having about the same conversations every episode it sure feels like filler. At this point it’s just like Game of Thrones. Just watching it to see how it ends.
Hi_Im_Dadbot on
So, the past two episodes where Homelander got locked in a room or knocked out and the Boys wandered around aimlessly as Soldier Boy did everything while dropping spoilers about his new, upcoming series WEREN’T filler episodes?
I’d hate to see these guys write a filler episode.
Interesting-Risk6446 on
Looking forward to see how this ends. I just hope it doesn’t end like Christopher Reeves first Superman. Reverse engineering to take away Homelander’s power.

Not really but have 3 or so episodes be filler for a final season is just not the play.
First 2 episodes were great. Then the Boys haven’t done anything since then. I was so excited to see where the storylines go and the Boys aren’t even the main characters anymore. This is Soilder Boys and crew show.

When it’s the final scene I expect every episode to move towards something and pay off what we’ve seen in previous seasons. The final season, especially eight episodes, is no time for fluff. The first episode was the right way to go and they should have carried that. These characters are fighting for their lives and stakes have never been higher. The writing should reflect that

Dont need fights, but forward plot momentum would be nice.

This feels like such a disingenuous response. There doesn’t need to be battle scenes every episode. The point is my god, this is the final season and some of the stuff feels utterly pointless. Annie going to her father was pointless. Even Hughie and Annie this last episode was pointless. We’ve had like multiple turns of Soldier Boy refusing to help Homelander, then helping him, and so on. It’s just tedious.

This season feels so small. Watching S1 in comparison is jarring how big that world felt.

I’m not the hardest to please when it comes to TV show fandom but I do think they are not moving with enough urgency right now. Like it doesn’t even feel like a final season at the moment, and there’s two episodes left. Especially when compared to the other two superhero shows on that just wrapped up their latest seasons like Daredevil and Invincible. Even when they slowed down they felt on mission and not repetitive like this season of The Boys feels.
And honestly when someone gets bumped off I can’t help but feel “That’s it for them? Really?” I just feel like there was so much more to do with a character and then they die. I haven’t liked that.
Kunipop on
No, I just expected the plot to you know, go forward.

The amount of FUCKING WHINING this show has produced in people is second-to-none.
How do they even get five seasons in when all they can do is complain about it?
Totes_mc0tes on
Not expecting a fight in every episode at all. We’re expecting clever dialogue and a plot that actually creates some level of tension and intrigue. We don’t need the umpteenth version of Kimiko and Frenchie’s will they/won’t they. We don’t need Homelander comically tying up the gang like a scooby doo episode. It makes zero sense in season 5 for HL to be within eyesight of the boys and not kill them. Season one didn’t have many fights but it had suspense. Figuring out what to do with Translucent felt like it held weight. Nothing in the last couple seasons has come close to that.

Probably wrong and a horrible take, but I half think they worked out a way to make the virus attach to v1, and this whole thing is just to throw us off until it happens in my opinion, otherwise, idk storytelling or whatever.

I enjoy the show but this season in particular it’s just constantly moving the goal post at the end of each episode. They get to a road block and set up the next week. The only “stakes” are going down the list of least important characters to kill before it’s just the main characters left. It’s not bad per se but it’s painfully obvious.

I’ve loved the Boys overall, but it really should’ve been 4 seasons. They could’ve easily packed down the story from both into 1.

The fucking face on the back of Ashley’s head and Paul Reiser have had more screentime and development than Ryan, the linchpin-wild-card who connects most of the major narrative beats and was positioned as playing an important thematic role.

I’m in it for the political satire and jokes mostly, and I’m very satisfied by the current season. I’ve gotten a lot of laughs out of every episode. I’ve never seen it as an action show, and I kind of space out when they do have the rare long fight scene, because it’s not the part I care about

Hot take but this show was never well written or all that amazing.
Season 1 (and somewhat 2) were carried by larger budgets and better cinematography – and the entire series is elevated by a few strong performances that help mask the shows pacing and logic issues.
Is it more poorly written now in S5? Yes, they are way too far up their own asses with the satire. But even then, I think the lower quality is somewhat due to budget constraints. They can’t afford to have as bombastic of a finale compared to what happens in the comics.
So instead we get this runaround nonsense where everyone is searching for some macguffin – and over-explaining plot points.
