IMHO, I do not believe the government only is the sole culprit for people not wanting to produce children. Besides economic problems, the working culture in Japan, associated with how people meet and treat each other, plus many other issues on how relationships are viewed might have their weight in the resulting decline, as well.

How serious is the sense of crisis, though?

      Does it warrant:

      1. A round table committee meeting,
      1. A rectangular table committee meeting,
      1. Or, holy fucking shitknickers, a triangular table committee meeting?

Will there be chocolate biscuits? This part is important.

The public voted in these clowns again and again, it’s completely on them.

As the actual article mentions it’s just oversimplification to pretend the government can do something about this because it’s not about time or money. People had much less of both and still had many children, and that’s because in the past if you were unmarried and childless at 25 your relatives would panic and essentially assign you a spouse to have children with, which led to a “normal” household. Nowadays you can live a fulfilling life without children or getting married. So while some people might have children if given enough funding, I figure that number isn’t as large as one might think. I maintain the opinion that if something has been happening for 45 years, it should be treated as a constant (until we reach a natural lower plateau) and we need to adapt to live with it rather than thinking that it can be magically solved without undoing a lot of the social advancements that Japan had gone through

    5. It makes me want to table flip and yell that the conversation is still ‚how can we have more babies?‘

Population decline is inevitable. Over half the countries all over the world are facing the same situation.

Especially for Japan the conversation we need to be having is population redistribution.

Hm. Throw some pocket change at me to use tinder and that should solve it.

    7. I remember a few years ago when a young Politician from Japan had fathered two children from two different women. And the public and press had put this poor fella to shame. One would think with birth rate being so low, why not celebrate this young man for helping Japan!

    8. If the meaning of life is to work and be competitive this is the outcome in a modern society. Give people another meaning for life and something to look forwards too that ain’t just a work career and it might change.

This „disaster“ is self-inflicted wound by Japanese public themself for their failure to hold politicians accountable for their failure to manage country properly.

What will it take a public to say enough is enough and keep LDP off from future power?

    10. Hmm. High inflation. Low wages. No social safety net for parents. Decades of oppressive work rules against parents. And decades of what is quite frankly, a soul killing corporate work environment.

Sure, you may have helped „mitigate“ some of these issues, but now you have to contend with low wages and high inflation.

Raising kids cost money. Even public schools in Japan cost a lot of money. If you can barely afford for yourself, you have an ethical duty to NOT subject your child to poverty. The more educated you are, the more likely you to make the ethical choice of not having children if you can’t properly raise them.

But by all means, keep voting for the same politicians with the same party with the same ideas, who do the same things… over and over again, expecting a different result. Some might call that…. insanity.

There are a lot of social issues and factors why people aren’t having kids.

But maybe people just REALLY DON’T WANT KIDS?! Those that do, *did*… 13.29 million were born, honestly whatever. Also, it’s maybe not as devastating as news make it out to be.

I personally believe the entire world can calm down with giving births. We are still frigging 8 Billion strong. 🙄

It’s only going to get worse as they let the yen slide to cover all the frivolous spending of the last 20+ years.
