Only a matter of time until it, too, reaches a tipping point.

ah ffs.
can we not spread this around? Yes it is the best city in Japan, and we happen to like not being crushed in the subway.
Besides the real beauty of Fukuoka is not so much the city itself actually, but when you get in a car and tour Kyushu – which is what most seem to not do. That’s pure driver heaven. So much to see and do, so many little quirky villages to pop in too, coasts, mountain drives, beautiful temples, parks, cuisine tourist heaven.

Went there two years ago. Gorgeous city with easy access to the beaches and countryside of Itoshima and surrounding areas via train. Am planning on moving there once I graduate.

In Seoul now and was mostly in KANSAI and Nagoya before and never really knew FUKUOKA till I lived in SK funnily enough.
That being said, it’s basically Korea-town now, because it’s so close to Incheon and GImpo and it’s super-easy to get to from here.
Fukuoka is really growing on me and would love to explore the whole Island eventually. Don’t forget you have all the cool towns as well: NAGASAKI, DAZAIFU, YANAGAWA (where you can get a Japanese-style Venice boat ride without all the attitude, again, filled with lively Ajuma-Korean Grannies, and everyone having a good time!), KUMAMOTO, KAGOSHIMA, OITA, etc. Tons of ONSEN and nature!
It’ll be under the radar for a bit longer I think as no one will really venture past KANSAI probably.
Interestingly when I went to HIROSHIMA (not KYUSHU mind you) we saw Koreans but they seemed to have mostly relatives there. Saw lots of families meeting families, not just tourists like I saw in FUKUOKA, there mostly for the all-you-can-eat TARAKO, cheap in Japan, but rare-ish or dearer in SK.

Unpopular opinion but from a tourist perspective, Fukuoka City does not really offer too much. I think it is an amazing place to live but the „attractions“ that it has (Ohori Park, Fukuoka Tower, Canal City?) can be found as better versions in other parts of Japan. Yatai culture is really the only thing that makes it stand out as a potential must-visit spot. The prefecture though does have some really nice spots and Kyushu as a whole as well.

I feel like Hiroshima has more to offer tbh. Fukuoka’s infrastructure is a bit lacking for a Japanese city.
