Every parent should want their child to have an easier life. We have one life and it shouldn’t be a contest of who has to suffer more to work harder especially when they don’t have to. Time here is so short why not let your kids enjoy it when you are able to let them.

I think it’s worth noting both of her kids are adopted and one is a trans girl. She seems like a mindful, supportive parent and not wanting to give your kids a completely free ride seems like good parenting to me. It doesn’t read like she’s telling them to fend for themselves, just that they should have some work ethic. (Saying this because I think it shows a different picture than what some commenters are implying)
