Weight-loss drug semaglutide reduces heavy alcohol drinking in new clinical trial
A new clinical trial reveals that a popular weight-loss medication helps people with both obesity and alcohol use disorder reduce their frequency of heavy drinking. The results suggest that these hormone-mimicking drugs might offer a novel and effective treatment path for millions of people struggling to control their alcohol intake. The findings were recently published in The Lancet.

I remember reading about a year ago that new GLP-1’s are being worked on for addiction relief. I’ve personally found my impulsive behavior lessened drastically from GLP-1 medication.
There’s got to be some catch to these wonder drugs, no?
I can personally attest to this fact!! I was drinking pretty heavily before starting Mounjaro. I rarely drink at all now. It’s been 6mos since I started the med.
That’s exactly how it worked for me. Addictive behaviors decreased dramatically, alcohol, marijuana, and food all under control now after decades of struggle.
Or, you know, people conscious about weight stop a habit associated with gaining weight
I’ve personally noticed I just don’t get a buzz from drinking while using Tirzepitide. So yeah, I generally don’t enjoy drinking anymore.
Drinking puts on so many calories, and people try to ignore it.
I’m not a heavy drinker- maybe a glass of wine once a month. Since i have been taking semaglutide, i have lost all tolerance for alcohol. It makes me feel sick, i get an instant headache, and no buzz. That kind ofntolerance loss. I can’t drink it. It tastes like poison, too. Pretty effective.
Would I also get super lean? Cessation and being shredded sounds awesome.
TMI but anecdotally it’s helped me with my porn/masturbation problem too. I get an upset stomach a couple times a month but generally it’s been all upsides. My diabetes is better controlled. I’ve lost weight. Doing more.
I started glp1s over a year ago and I have not had any change in my desire to drink. If anything I’m more likely to want a tasty cocktail because I have no desire to eat.
Jeez, we’ll really try anything but LSD huh? Wish we could use the thing we know has really good efficacy for treatment and is super low cost.
The heavy alcohol drinking is probably a huge factor in their weight issue in the first place.
Addictive behavior is tied to disruptions in the dopamine cycle, this is hardly surprising.
Monjaro has made zero impact on my drinking.
I’ve always been very controlled about it, but drink more than my doctor would like.
I figure some people get a boost from the decision to monitor their eating that means they drink less.
Whether there is a verifiable and testable benefit… jury is out. It would be good to see some blind / placebo trials because placebo genuinely helps problem drinkers.
I am borderline alcoholic and struggling to cut back or quit entirely. Nothing else has worked. Approve these drugs for alcohol addiction already! Been reading the same reports for the last 2 years
These weight loss drugs are horrible, they should be completely banned. What happened to discipline?
When I started Zepbound (Tirzepatide) one of the immediate side effects was a total loss of my taste due alcohol
I mentioned it to my doctor and he said it was so common a side effect that it was expected the FDA would be approving it for addiction treatment.
It literally made alcohol taste gross and even the interest in having a drink evaporated.
After I started getting medicated for ADHD I was able to quit smoking and drinking and even cut back from 6 cups of coffee a day to 2.
Obviously everyone is different but my experience has been that these addictive behaviors are born out of a serious problem my body was trying to flag which wasn’t being treated.
