This works most of the time. It does make an elephant a type of dog, though.
What’s interesting is this is exactly the problem AI ran into, a rule-based classification fails, so modern systems use probabilistic models instead. The brain seems to be doing something very similar: not applying definitions, but constantly predicting ‘how likely is this to be a cat?’ based on experience
