    1. > Speaking in a recent interview on the Hits Radio Breakfast Show alongside Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt during “The Devil Wears Prada 2” press tour, Streep criticized what she described as a growing reliance on clear-cut heroes and villains in contemporary movies. “I think we tend to Marvel-ize the movies now. We got the villains and we got the good guys, and it’s so boring,” she said, adding that the most compelling storytelling comes from characters who resist easy categorization.

      > “What’s really interesting about life is that some of the heroes are flawed and some of the villains are human and interesting and have their own strengths,” she continued. “So that’s what I like about this [film]. It’s messier.”

„Marvel-ize“ because heroes and villains didn’t exist before? And there are no movies at all with „messier“ characterization?

      🙄

People are very simple minded and would be too confused by anything approaching a gray area.

Says the star of an unnecessary sequel that is being done purely as a cash grab

    5. This is a statement from someone that hasn’t watched marvel movies. Every hero, except Captain America, is a mess. The weapons dealer, womanizing, alcoholic. The arrogant, asshole doctor. The immature god. The ex assassin who hates her past and believes she will never atone for it.

People have different tastes. Just make good movies and don’t worry about it.

The idea she’s putting forth – that the Devil Wears Prada characters are complex and not easy to categorize – is ludacris.

I mean, everything became more black and white as a response to a trend where everything, *everything*, was grey. There were no heroes, everyone had to be an anti-hero/ine with selfish, ugly motives that were only heroic because their villains were worse.

    8. Meryl Streep will return in *The* *Daredevil* *Wears* *Prada*.. *Again: Season* *3*

    9. Feels kind of unfair to call this ‘marvel-Ize’ Clear heroes and villains is one of the oldest ways to tell a story.

    10. I’m with Meryl. Between these super hero films and reboots, Hollywood has become lazy, unimaginative and boring.

      ….huh???

A protagonist and an antagonist isn’t normal in cinema?? It’s something of Marvel??

I’m sorry, *who’s* starring in the most unnecessary sequel of the year?

People talking about her sequel like she hasn’t pushed boundaries her entire career. Also, I truly believe she’s speaking about her own movie not doing that. Shes also done a ton of films at her age that many people here don’t know and never saw (recent films)

She’s right and I thoroughly enjoy morally gray characters but like… Sometimes you just want a simple movie. Nothing wrong there.

You’d swear marvel movies were the first ever blockbusters meant to be watched with your brain off if you just listened to the way old people talk about them.

She could’ve said „reductive“ instead of „Marvelize“ to get her point across

I mean in all fairness to Marvel, they made an amoral weapons developer like Stark into a heroic figure. Storytelling wise, Marvel does have more nuance than she gives it credit for.

I thought she was going to talk about the filmmaking style.

Love Marvel or not, many of the characters are often morally gray. That’s what made the comic books so popular. Just look at a guy like The Punisher.

the devil wears prada 2 itself is an unnecessary cashgrab. The storyline and everything else are boring. Miranda took a backseat this time around, the character which was the driving force of the og film. everyone is stupid in the film, they literally explain everything every time.

As for my own contribution to this dump I’m gonna point out that we’re down from 3+ marvel movies a year to like 1.

Cinema bros and gals are going to have to find a new reason for why audiences just aren’t smart enough to „get on their level“.

Either that or quit huffing their own farts long enough to have a moment of clarity to go looking for more stuff that meets their needs.

There’s lots of good old stuff, niche stuff, and probably 2 or 3 „mainstream movies“ you haven’t seen to distract you from the misery of having to share the planet with such unwashed masses who enjoy other things.

    20. If only these people would watch some Marvel shows before they use it to justify their sentences. Shows like wonderman, daredevil, loki or even thunderbolts have some of the most interesting character work for both heroes and villians. So with all due respect meryl streep, if you gonna diss it, please at least watch it.

    21. She’s not wrong. But it has been happening before Marvel.

Too much exposition and a fourth act have ruined movie story telling

    22. Not understanding the critique…when I think Marvel-ize, I think of a plot formula that feels very Disney. The villains are complex and nuanced. In fact one critique I hear of marvel is that they do not make enough “evil guys who are simply just evil” villains.
