    1. >The doctrine of privatization often amounts to a transfer of public assets to the already wealthy.
That being so, Carney’s privatization proposal is a gift to new NDP Leader Avi Lewis.
Though his party had dwindled to a handful of MPs, Lewis has been handed the makings of a crusade in defending the national interest.
      Elbows up, indeed.

The Star has been a real letdown lately for progressive causes, so I’m pleasantly surprised they’re actually criticizing Carney here. Very into this.

Sick of privatisation – we need to reverse that trend. Have no problem with crown corps competing with private companies but would want to see crown corps in most significant industries that can provide a window for governments.

    3. We need to fight back on this. If they get away with it, this will just be the beginning. And this will absolutely not benefit normal Canadians in any way. The exact opposite, in fact. Privatizing our infrastructure is a horrible, horrible idea.

    4. Why would anyone even think of selling YVR? It’s recenrly been voted best airport in North America for the 15th time!
No private sector operator will make it better, and they sure won’t provide as many community benefits as community management has. It’s not in a dor-profit company’s DNA. Their purpose is to benefit their shareholders.

This is one of the first things where Carney and I definitely diverge. I want no more public property sold to private corporations. We can never get it back. It’s ours.

Canadian airports are among the most expensive in the world. Public ownership and management has not been doing us any favours.

before we get too far into this, did ‚Mark Carney’s Government“ say that or are we still going on star insider reporting of ideas being batted around?

When has privatization of anything made things better? Only better for investors not staff or services. Privitize the profits and socializes the losses seems to be the motto of financial institutions.

    9. It worked so well for Hwy 407 toll route. Thanks to the Conservative government selling it off, its now the most expensive toll route in North America

If we weren’t looking at a situation where revenues are stagnating and structural deficits were rising I would agree

But if our revenue continues to stagnate, healthcare costs continue to rise, debt grows, debt service costs rise, and therefore our ability to sustainably fund services like healthcare becomes at risk, I think this has got to be on the table

Just taking one airport, Pearson, alone. It earns $1B a year in EBITDA, implying a conservatively, based on market multiples, $10-15B value if not more considering it is a tier one airport. It has $5B in net debt but that debt and other debt could be repaid with proceeds

Selling that alone could generate annual debt service cost reductions of $300-500 million easily. And that’s just one airport.

Of course, this does not come without costs and risks. But I think if we keep running these deficits we can’t rule out difficult choices like this

    11. Why not set the land lease to $0? Airports are a public good, and the AA’s already maintain the land. That money is being charged simply because the Federal government owns the land.

Every time I read one of these articles I am left with the conclusion that the federal government either simply doesn’t understand that the airports have already been privatized or they have concluded that the private airport authorities can’t afford to pay what the federal government expects to realize from the land.
