Today I found out that Non-citizens can join the Canadian Forces.
It’s not just the armed forces. They come from places where women are genuinely treated like 2nd class citizens, and our soil doesn’t magically change their minds
This is a problem everywhere, not just the military (speaking from experience where I currently work).

Every part of that title is gross to read
Time to learn boys and girls. It will be tough, but as long as Canada reminds you there is no other option, you’ll figure it out.
It’s in all our citizenship documents. You have your culture, but you’ve come here and will respect the rights and freedoms of everyone living here.
„Non-citizens in Canadian Forces“ – what? They letting PRs into the military? Why?

Not surprising. I experienced this as a female TA in university. With some first year students a woman telling them they were wrong about something was evidently hard to accept.
Unfortunately for them algebra doesn’t care about people’s sensibilities. At some point if someone is so blinded by things like gender that they refuse feedback about objective facts, maybe it is best that they fail. Then maybe they will reconsider their approach and change, or not.
Wow, shocking stuff that no one could have seen coming.
Friendly reminder that in a lot of places, their „left“ isn’t even our middle.
Peer?! They don’t see them as actually human beings in some cases.
Turns out importing third-world brings third-world problems
lol.. what a surprise when we import people from cultures that don’t have the same level of respect for each other as we do.
Weird title because the extent is that new recruits don’t listen to their female officers like they would a male counterpart.
Which is something just kind of prevalent in the world still, the patriarchy hasn’t exactly ceased to be. At my place of employment I’m transferred calls all the time because the person on the line isn’t respecting what my female coworker is saying so I need to say the same thing and then magically because I sound like a big scary man they listen.
So it’s not just the armed forces and it’s not just the people new to Canada. It’s people in general.
Teach them to respect their peers by punishing their whole unit then. That person disrespecting women will be so resented and hated by their unit, that they’ll never live it down while in uniform. If the issue persists, The whole group will eventually take matters into their own hands to teach the troublemaker a lesson about gender equality and respect towards the opposite sex.
Wow turns out that when you bring in people from cultures with different values and do absolutely nothing to instill your own values in them they…keep their values? And people suffer because of it?
Curious.
Maybe they need to be enrolled into a basic „Be Respectful“ life course 🤦♂️
Big surprise when you bring in people that unironically believe in a caste system.
My god, for the people freaking out about „non citizens“ in the Canadian Forces, it has been that way for a long time. This is not some recent thing. There was a dude in my basic training platoon who was a PR from Iran. Yes, he could speak English and performed just as well as any. There was a dude in my troop in Afghanistan who was a Pakistani citizen (hoooo boy, the locals did not like him and we had to tell them he was Mexican).
The US military, you know, that bastion of non patriotism, also does this, and has for decades. My father served in the US military during the Vietnam War because they would give you a Green Card right then right there if you signed up.
The actual disturbing part is the second part of the sentence.
All this progress fought for over the last generations only to be destroyed by leaders with suicidal empathy. It’s all pretty unreal
Damn that’s crazy, who would have ever thought such a thing could happen?
Non citizens in forces? What the f*ck are we doing?
Can we FINALLY stop pretending that other cultures automatically embrace western values?
This insanity needs to end.
My ex is a pilot and she used to be a flight instructor before that. She had a non-citizen as a student once and he requested that he be given a pillow or two on his seat so that he’d be sitting up higher than her because his culture didn’t allow that to not be the case. Call me whatever you’d like, but I thought that was absolute bullshit to request.
Many Canadian citizens in the armed forces also struggle with that apparently. Sexual misconduct cases are quite prevalent. 7.5% of women in the armed forces have experienced sexual misconduct from peers or supervisors.
obviously there are some prevalent, negative cultural differences with respect to treatment of women that need to be weeded out through assimilation but it’s insane that people in this thread are just going to pretend immigrants invented misogyny lol
*especially* when it comes to institutions like the military
Ridiculous. If they can’t behave like Canadians and respect individuals then kick them out. Why does it have to get to the point that there is an article about it? At the very least discipline them. This is why France has Legionnaires for non citizens.
What could possibly go wrong allowing caste system society immigrants into a country that supports equality for women?
/S
It’s not just the military and it’s not just non citizens. Sexism is still alive and well in Canada. I’ve lost count how often a client comes in and will ignore my boss and start talking to me just because I’m a man and I have to say „I don’t know, ask my boss“ and even when they’re talking the guy will keep looking at me like I’m going to jump into their conversation.
Shouldn’t these men have been weeded out before they were even accepted into the forces? There’s nothing in the aptitude tests that would reveal these beliefs?
The core issue is that any soldier who cannot respect their fellow service members as equals creates a dangerous weakness in the chain of command and destroys the unit cohesion required for survival. In a high-stakes war zone, your life depends on the competence of the person standing next to you, so refusing to recognize a peer based on their gender is a liability that Canada’s military simply cannot afford.
lol. They could have polled the private IT sector and found this out 15 years ago.
