So it’s an excuse to drink during the whole night until morning and not having to go to work on 1st of May lol. It’s a big thing in Tartu, the second-largest town in Estonia. It’s a university town and for that night the „rights“ of the city are given to the students. So.. a lot of drinking etc.
People might also dress up as witches and other stuff.

The UK has it on the first Monday to guarantee it’s going to be a long weekend with a bank holiday Monday. That way it lets everyone party and have fun for longer.
Bank holidays cause a noticeable boom in the economy as well. Hospitality venues see boosts to their income because everyone goes out to pubs. Usually it’s warm enough this time of year that everyone has big family BBQs because they know they have the Monday off work to suffer their hangovers.
It makes the most sense out of all these dates. It basically guarantees a long weekend to the country every year, rather than being a different day every year. What use would a Wednesday be? What use is today for a bank holiday day. Everyone’s finishing early and going out tonight anyways, so the day off gains nothing for anybody!

In Denmark while it’s not a mandated day off, much of the public sector gets a half day for May 1st and another half day on Constitution Day, June 5th. Both days are marked with political speeches, but May 1st leans more socialist, and Constitution Day more conservatives. Those of us employed by the state are encouraged to combine the two half days off onto one of the days, according to our preference.
It’s still fair to say that this is „no public holiday“ because this is just a matter of the union contract agreements, rather than law.

All the people talking about partying and drinking is why it’s „Labour Day“ now instead of the International Workers‘ Day, and why you’ll soon be begging your boss to give you a day off on it while your corporatist unions assure you you’ve never had it better.

Denmark and the Netherlands have freed the working class and incorporated them into their social democratic utopias, so there is no need to celebrate Labour Day.

The UK does it best honestly, Labour Day can drop on a weekend which is always depressing, so having it a guaranteed long weekend for people working mon-fri is better imo.

It’s called bealtaine in Ireland. It’s the inverse to Samhain (Halloween). Both are Gaelic festivals.

What is a „Labour day“?
Lopsided_Day_4416 on
Labour day is technically not a bank holiday in the UK, and instead we have ‚early may‘ as a spring/summer holiday, which traditionally was ‚May day‘ and predated labour day by hundreds of years. In the UK it is deliberately not called either ‚may day‘ or ‚labour day‘ offically, but most people I’ve known have called it mayday rather than labour day.

UK. It’s not Labour Day. It’s May Day and aligns with the pagan festival Beltane. As Labour Day is a USA invention any European name for the day predates the USA naming.

Im working right now a 12 hour shift…
Although it’s a public holiday – it’s not Labour Day in Estonia.
Officially it’s „Spring Holiday“ to celebrate the beginning of spring.
And the *real* reason is because the day/night before that there’s Volbriöö or Walpurgis Night..
