WASHINGTON, April 30 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump on Thursday said „probably“ when asked whether he would consider pulling U.S. troops out of Italy and Spain, a day after announcing that Washington was ‌looking at reducing the number of military personnel in Germany.

Trump has harshly criticized NATO allies for not sending their navies to help open the Strait of Hormuz, which was closed to global shipping following the start of a U.S.-Israeli air war against Iran on February 28. He has also said that he is considering withdrawing the United States from the alliance.

An internal Pentagon email, reported by Reuters last week, outlined options for the United States to punish NATO allies it believes failed to support U.S. operations in the war with Iran, including suspending Spain from the alliance.

Trump, who discussed the possibility of removing some U.S. troops from Europe earlier this month, on Wednesday said his administration was looking at cuts to U.S. forces in Germany and a decision ‌would be made soon.

Asked on Thursday if he would also consider pulling U.S. troops out of Italy and Spain, two countries that have also been critical of the Iran war, Trump said, „Probably … Look, why shouldn’t I? Italy has not been of any help to us and Spain has been horrible, absolutely horrible.“

Trump last month threatened to impose a full U.S. trade embargo on Spain after the European ally refused to let the U.S. military use its bases for missions linked to strikes on Iran.

The U.S. had just over 68,000 active-duty military personnel assigned permanently in its overseas bases in Europe as of December 2025, data from the U.S. Defense Manpower Data Center shows. More than half – about 36,400 – are based in Germany.

  2. Do Germany too. What is the point of them being there if they are just gonna operate as a rogue state anyways?

  3. His handlers will remind him that they need these bases to project strength or at least try to project it.

Be funny to watch them pull out of Europe and realize they can’t project power to the Middle East anymore and protect their buddies in Israel from doing war crimes. Their bases in the region are pretty much toast as well. Maybe they will have to solve their issues at home then.

Good. The sooner the better. Its absolute insanity to have an enemy on our soil which in the US national security strategy aims at destroying EU and supporting pro-Putin, anti-democratic authoritarians in all of Europe. The day Trump decides to use military force against Europe, not a single member of congress will stop him and not a single US general will go against orders.

  6. This is classic „cutting off the nose to spite the face“ behavior. Europe has been an essential part of U.S. strategic power since WW2 – an essential platform for power projection.

Pulling out of European countries because they hurt your feelings, or cannot be easily cowed/manipulated into a war (remember kids, build the coalition first…) is an incredibly stupid decision.

It’s no less or more than I expect from him, but that does not make it less disappointing.

To quote one of the Italian top-actor within our security infrastructure, „ci stiamo cacando sotto!“

Bruh last time he said they most likely wont extend the ceasefire and guess what they did? Extendes the ceasefire.

We should accept that the us president is a demented old man.

  9. Having troops indirectly under Putin’s command inside Europe is a security risk.

He doesn’t know there are troops in Italy and Spain. Reporters have learned how to milk him for juicy soundbites because he always wings it like a kid who didn’t do the reading.

  11. Trumps memory last as long as the last person talking to him. He only says this because the reporter asking reminded him Spain and Italy existed. If he wasn’t asked anything they’d be fine.

And nothing of value was lost. Europe would be much safer with its own nukes than these parasites endlessly capitalizing on a war they themselves financed.

Just do it. It will be better for us all. The next US president (if there will be one) after this clown will come begging to restore the bases in Europe.

I doubt it will happen he may pull some troops but the the military establishment will resist this to the extreme. That and Trump will find something new to be.distracted by

  15. Both are rather important sites for naval bases. But I guess they can build new bases somewhere else if Trump likes spending money.

  16. Hahahah.

He thinks those bases are „to protect“ Italy and Spain and not to give the US coverage over the strait of gibraltar and the Mediterranean.

American education in a nutshell… now made president

  17. The first thing he does right.

Get your troops and your bought out politician with you.

  18. shadowsinthestars on

Well, fuck off then. We don’t need blatant enemy actors ruining our security.

Given the benefits of the bases in Spain and Italy almost entirely favour the US over the host nation, go ahead…

  20. RustyPlastics on

Bye. No reason to even try arguing with them to remain in Europe. They are no benefit to anyone besides themselves

  21. Trump is actually a 5D-chess pro-EU federalist. By threatening to pull everyone out of Italy and Spain, he’s forcing the EU to actually build a unified military. He’s the accelerationist hero the Strategic Autonomy crowd deserves. Macron must be thrilled his vision is finally being realized by… *checks notes* …Donald Trump.

Although I agree with the rest of the comments and this could be an opportunity for EU to get rid of USA be aware that this could be the preliminaries to military attack EU in Greenland as they wouldn’t have troops in our countries that we could take hostages

Jesus Christ just do it already. Stop threatening this or that. Just do it. Let the world adjust to not having US military bases all over the fucking place.

  24. Don’t let the resupply lines for your aircraft carriers hit your ass on the way out
