Why put straight in quotation marks? This line is straight

On the world’s first singlehanded circumnavigation, Joshua Slocum paused at Cape Town, and met [Paul Kruger](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Kruger), president of the Transvaal; who declared that it’s not possible to sail *around* a flat earth, and Slocum must therefore be sailing *in* the world.
It could be longer if it went around Madagascar. And you could also go south and through Malacca before crossing the pacific

It’s the longest straight line to sail; there are infinit longer straight lines to fly around the world.

Lots of horizon.

Recently saw a great circle sea route between east and west coasts of Canada. That would be longer

OP here! Just a quick clarification: I’m not a native English speaker, so I didn’t realize that putting ’straight‘ in quotation marks implied irony. The line is indeed mathematically straight on a globe. Sorry for the confusion! 😅 In Indian English, quotation marks sometimes mean emphasis

I’m sure you can find a longer north south line considering you can leave Antarctic, sail up the Atlantic, back down the Pacific and hit the other side of Antarctica. Couldn’t you?

Are you sure ? There is one from Canada to Canada

I don’t understand the spherical dynamics at all. Though the line is straight, you would have to regularly change your heading to achieve this right?

What about a line that follows 56°S?

How computer scientists proved this is the longest path:
>The longest straight-line path over water begins in Sonmiani, Balochistan, Pakistan, passes between Africa and Madagascar and then between Antarctica and Tierra del Fuego in South America, and ends in the Karaginsky District, Kamchatka Krai, in Russia. It is 32,089.7 kilometers long.

They say Sir Francis Drake left a treasure along this route.

Im willing to be educated: how does sailing southwest from the Pacific result in sailing northwest in the Atlantic. Is the ship in question sailing through Antarctica?

It’s not a „straight“ line. It’s just a straight line. It’s the map that’s curved.
