Honestly, good. They shouldn’t be able to use the plagiarized work and then say “sorry, we’ll limit ai use to only when necessary” when that’s so flexible for the company

I mean, if they want to go that path (not that I’m saying they’re wrong to want to protect their output), I’m sure the creators of things like Belladonna of Sadness, Fantastic Planet, and Aeon Flux might like to have a word with Gobelins about the difference between plagiarism and inspiration. Did MS ride that line a little too close? Probably, and they should definitely be taken to task over their pro-AI BS, but I’m falling on the side of “inspired by the same things as it was rather than outright plagiarised”

    3. While we’re at it, we need to put the same effort into calling out large labels that blatantly use AI. As much as some people don’t like AI when it’s not their favorite labels, Korea generally likes AI and many Kpop idols (like my Red Velvet bias Wendy) have talked about using AI in their everyday lives. I still believe that Mystic Story should’ve learn from Billlie’s last comeback, but it’s easier to not pay real artists for their work and let AI do the job or pay AI artists to generate stuff.

Speaking of Mystic and Billie.. I dont understand if they want to flex their English or they just want to sound so classy with their album title.
Even their korean fans cannot memorize their album titles and singles like:
      RAW and projection
The collective souls and unconscious chapter one and chapter two
      The bilage of perception
Appendix ‚ of all we lost
      The billie’s odditorium
      Memoirs of echo unseen.

    5. that doubling down had to of fanned the flames, cut them a check already, credit them.

Honestly, this situation has been so insane.

Mystic Story uploads a very obviously plagiarized video with heavy AI usage, their CEO started speaking fluent Yapanese and goes on a rant about AI being good because of Miles Davis and Andy Warhol, which made people even more upset, and now they’re possibly getting sued.

I’m still debating whether or not I want to even listen to this comeback, but their CEO’s fake philosophical commentary and the fact that the video is STILL UP ON THEIR CHANNEL a full 7 days later is making me want to listen to this comeback less and less.

As if I thought that this comeback hasn’t been painful enough as Belllie’ve…….now there’s this 😭 I’m so so so angry at the current Mystic Story CEO for how this has been handled and how this negatively affects the Billlie girls, the team’s reputation, and of course this small animation team whose work was ripped off via the use of generative AI. Honestly, I don’t blame this studio if they do go forward with legal action, especially when faced with zero remorse from the people who stole from you (AKA the Mystic Story response that basically said „we investigated ourselves and found no plagiarism, also we will only use generative AI ‚when necessary‘ moving forward to placate you“ BS). At the same time, I don’t think that Mystic Story or Billlie will survive legal action, [especially since SM Entertainment no longer backs Mystic Story in any way](https://www.reddit.com/r/kpop/comments/1szk6z7/comment/oj2tr2o/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) 🙁 What a mess. And all of this could’ve been easily avoided if Mystic Story just didn’t use generative AI and didn’t plagiarize for this comeback!!! I’m livid!!! 😭

    8. Damn, they had the hall to plagiarize from a student film from Gobelins?? A well known animation school?!

    9. Just looking at it from a legal perspective, there is no doubt that most AI generation tools have used large amounts of copyrighted work in their datasets, the companies themselves do not claim otherwise.

The argument they try to make is that learning from existing artworks is the same way humans learn and „fair use“. As an example they feed in an image of the light hitting an object at sunset and generating a mixture of red and blue shadows, this is used as a reference to learn how light behaves.

The legal situation doesn’t really seem to be settled, AI companies are heavily lobbying governments to be on their side. There are alot of potential rulings that could be made, e.g:

      – Any generative AI tool that uses copyrighted works as an input is not fair use.

      – A generative AI tool can use copyrighted works so long as the output generated is not sufficiently similar to a copyrighted work.

      – A generative AI tool is legal, unless the prompts make clear the user is attempting to replicate a copyrighted work.

There is also a load of grey areas and uncertainty around parody, its settled law (in many countries) you can use copyrighted characters in artwork to parody them

    10. As a fan this whole saga has been so upsetting, and honestly Gobelins should sue. I love Billlie, but Mystic Story has completely fumbled this whole comeback and it has been really frustrating to watch this all unfold.

What drew me to Billlie was the really strong creative direction, so seeing the lack of investment of like, effort in the actual pictures of girls, and then the reliance on AI trained on the specific aesthetic of a group of student artists has been the worst kind of contrast.
