  1. Gotta make it as difficult as possible to vote otherwise conservatives would have no chance at all.

    > The Supreme Court itself has shown itself to be the enemy of democracy.

Buried the lede a bit here, but probably the most important truth in understanding the demise of the US as any sort of actual democracy. It’s not recent.

  3. HerbaciousTea on

There was a guy in another thread about this actually trying to defend this because, in their *actual* words, „Equality based on race is discriminatory.“

This is the caliber of thinking we are dealing with. ‚Racial equality is discrimination‘ because it’s „based on race,“ said without a hint of fucking irony.

Sorry Trump v. US was the worst.

This is merely the second worst this century.

I hope Roberts knows Taney. He’s his successor.

  5. Once again Clarence Thomas destroys the very things that helped him get to where he is ..

Worst ruling in a century is a bold claim, but honestly… they might be right. This is judicial activism at its finest.

So let me understand. 5 people hold most of the wealth, we can’t afford to live, wages haven’t increased in decades, and now we can’t vote to change any of this? It is like they are insisting on a revolution.

When the Supreme Court is this openly partisan, we don’t have a functioning democracy anymore. We have a theocracy with extra steps.

Republicans knew exactly what they were doing when they schemed their way through the courts to dilute the minority vote by challenging section 2 of the voting Rights Act. A historically significant provision that protects voters from being unfairly sequestered

Republicans have been suppressing the vote for years and taking advantage of voter geography to gain seats where they otherwise wouldn’t.

Their voter suppression campaign escalated in the aftermath of Jan 6th and in response to Trump’s ‚big lie.“

The GOP has seized on this post Jan 6 environment to sow distrust in our elections. They have piggybacked off Trump’s lies of election fraud; tapping into a stockpile of conspiracy theories, lies, and misinformation to dissuade and deceive the public and to carry out a nationwide campaign of disenfranchisement and voter suppression.

Republicans are also consolidating power at an alarming rate; abusing their trifecta and their control over state legislatures to give themselves the ultimate say on how maps are drawn; unilaterally deciding who their voters are and not the other way around.

MAGA can clutch their pearls all they want, but these redistricting wars are a consequence of the Republican party’s extreme gerrymandering efforts.

Democrats are just responding in kind—an effective, reasonable and common sense strategy.

Remember that in CA, Americans came out in droves to vote overwhelmingly in favor of proposition 50. Election data shows that some counties that voted for Trump in 2024 also supported prop 50.

For decades, Republicans have been exploiting the fact that Democrats are more vulnerable to gerrymandering. Republicans have also benefitted most from redistricting because they have broader control over state legislatures.

But the GOP has also tried other ways over the years to influence and subvert elections

Republicans have frequently attacked or have even sought to eliminate election procedures and conveniences like early voting, mail in balloting, polling accessibility and extended polling hours, existing ID laws, automatic and same day voting registration, ballot boxes, ranked choice voting, voting rights, standardized election security measures, among other things.

Republicans try to disguise their voter suppression tactics as an effort to „protect election integrity.“

And in recent years especially, Republicans have been capitalizing on the ignorance and distrust of their voters to empower themselves with more legal authority to challenge election results and consolidate control over the election system.

To make matters worse, Trump has been federalizing state troops and mobilizing trigger happy ICE thugs to US cities around the country where he no doubt plans to use this paramilitary force to suppress the vote in upcoming elections.

Then there’s Trump’s recent threats of „nationalizing“ US elections.

So much for states rights huh?

Republicans have the gall to say they’re „protecting the integrity of elections,“ while making every effort to do the opposite.

Other systemic problems impede free and fair elections too. Issues that Republicans deliberately ignore or fail to address properly.

Like foreign election meddling, the awful Citizens United ruling and campaign finance corruption.

If MAGA is truly intent on „protecting election integrity,“ they should focus on the myriad systemic issues that Trump/Republicans continue to exploit instead of obsessing over baseless conspiracy theories.

But Republicans have succeeded at using culture war propaganda and conspiracy theories about rampant election fraud to divert attention away from their efforts to erode the democratic process.

Another one of their favorite tactics involves scapegoating immigrants, minorites and marginalized groupswho they urge you to blame for our nation’s problems like manufactured and pervasive „voter fraud.“

Turns out, Republicans are the REAL threat to „election integrity.“

  10. Their argument is centered on the nonsense idea that the South has effectively eliminated racism, therefore no need to provide legal protections. Hogwash.

This Court has done more damage to this country in the last few years than most presidents do in two terms.

  12. Nah. Citizens United is ahead still. Largely because it was one of the dominos that led to this mess.

  13. ZonghZonghZongh on

The conservative majority in SCOTUS was basically the plaintiff in this case. They pretty much gave Louisiana the roadmap on what they were looking for, and how to win this case in their ruling in *Robinson v. Landry.*

The ruling released today was really for *Supreme Court of the United States vs Democracy,* and Democracy lost.

  14. TheGOPisTheDeepState on

The SCOTUS GOP partisan hacks are bought and paid for by the federalist society and the GOP deepstate oligarchs. What do you expect, traitors to this nation and the rule of law.

  15. Desperate times require desperate measures. They will do anything to try to protect the House and the Senate during the midterms.

  16. Adept-Donut-4229 on

A pool of 100 judges, so you won’t know which 9 you get. This is the only solution.

  17. notanamateur on

I’d argue Citizens United and Bush v Gore are worse but only barely so.

  18. I_Enjoy_Beer on

Maybe?  Remember, they overturned Roe v Wade.

The main takeaway is that they are massive pieces of hypocritical shit and Dems should have expanded and packed the fuck out of the court 4 years ago.

Worst ruling in a century … so far. With this court, any new low is possible. The bar is now on the floor.

  22. Born-Total9652 on

The court just effectively ruled that the Constitution doesnt protect you from the government, only from the right government doing it to the wrong people. Absolute disaster for anyone who isnt a billionaire.

  23. Elegant_Sundae4491 on

Oh good, more activist judges legislating from the bench. They just threw 100 years of precedent in the trash so corporations can buy elections with zero accountability.

  24. RobutNotRobot on

Nah the worst ruling in the history of the court happened just 3 years ago, when they proclaimed that Presidents of the United States are unbound by all law. It had no basis in US law, tradition, or the history of the country. It was created just as a get Trump out of jail card so he could rule the country with an iron fist once again.

And there were 77 million people out there that missed the torture.

  25. Sea-Bandicoot-5329 on

We have to remember that the Jurist in the Supreme Court are not truly independent if they can be bought with trips, houses, …. Without needing to disclose to ethics. Unbelievable since we always believed that they weren’t beholden to any corporate influence or other legislative branch in order to hold power. We really have been hoodwinked. Justice is supposed to interpret the law and our constitution. I guess she isn’t blind

  26. Buck vs Bell – forced sterilization of mentally challenged people is ok
Korematsu vs US – internment is ok
Bowers vs Hardwick – locking up people for being gay is ok

What SCOTUS just did is terrible, but its really annoying when people don’t know history. Here’s some more fun ones… [https://time.com/4056051/worst-supreme-court-decisions/](https://time.com/4056051/worst-supreme-court-decisions/)

    deporting immigrants to warring nations
    trump immunity
    row v wade
    unions

It’s shit like this that that makes it of the utmost importance that we have a constitutional amendment enforcing term limits on federal judges. They are no different and just as bad as the mullahs that run Iran’s court system.

  29. alphabets0up_ on

I think at this point there is no question about it. Democrats need to expand the court ASAP. We didn’t under Biden and look what happened.

Hillary warned us. She screamed it from the top of her lungs She explained it in detail and the repercussions that the Trump 1st term would have. She has been spot on. Then when Kamala was at the podium she laid it out too what would befall this country at the hand of Trump and Heritage. Hillary joined her and so did ex Trump cabinet members. Even Ken Burns who never commented warned us about history and the courts and loss of rights.
I will never ever forgive those who voted for this and the atrocities happening. Or the people
Who couldn’t get off their ass or said both parties are the same.
We just devolved again allowing hate to override rights.
The USA is full of stupid apathetic sheep. Hell is coming for us. Sorry it has already arrived.

Say what you will about the veracity of this opinion (and others) but please do NOT use the word “conservative” to describe any of this. There is no conservation of justice or the rule of law here, and there is no conservative thought driving any of it. Originalist, possibly; authoritarian, perhaps; ethno-nationalist, maybe; conservative? Not on your life!

A long time ago the American people knew EXACTLY what had to happen to rid themselves of tyranny. Instead all they do is take a day off every few months or so to pout in the streets thinking that if they pout hard enough the tyrants will remove their boots from their neck. Don’t give me that baloney that „oh but we need our jobs, we need our health insurance.“ because guess what?! The tyrants don’t want workers! They don’t want you healthy! They want you to be their slaves! ALL of those excuses are not going to work on what is coming!

  33. AuroraFinem on

There is no world where the US survives another 10 years under this Supreme Court even if Dems win everything in movement.

We cannot stress enough that we must impeach members of the court and replace them. If republicans refuse to convict in the senate, pack the courts. There is no present risk to the US greater than 6 of the sitting SCTOUS justices, including Trump, and this is not hyperbole.
