  1. The GOP was playing the long game, for decades, to arrive at complete and total control of SCOTUS. And this is the fruit of their labor. Republicans have a hard time convincing certain people to vote for them. So life would be a lot easier if those people just weren’t allowed to vote.

Not a big surprise. America has always been a racist hellhole. The Voting Rights Act and some of the progress since the 60s was an exception. We are just going back to „Normal“ aka „Great Again“ for racists.

  3. Fuck this, it’s time to impeach, remove and convict this corrupt and illegitimate court.

  4. Specialist-Clock-914 on

I’d be shocked if they actually did something that was right at this point. The cynicism and hopelessness is so real.

  5. Angedelanuit97 on

Democrats will absolutely have to expand the court in 2029 when they take back control. They need to start campaigning on that now.

  6. MadContrabassoonist on

Never forget; the reason no meaningful voting rights legislation happened during the Biden administration was not because of that dastardly AOC, that old kook Bernie, and their unamerican “Squad” of radical progressives.  It was because of “reasonable moderates” who enjoyed getting to smell their own farts on the Sunday morning shows more than protecting the rights of their constituents.

  7. Remember everyone who told us we were being *hysterical* about what would happen in the Supreme Court if Trump won in 2016?

  8. Eminence120 on

We live in a vile failed democracy, but that has always been the case. The brief period of time post the civil right act to get things right utterly failed. Boomers and silent generation folks decided wealth and power are more important than equity.

  9. So the loose and not detailed claim of racially motivated intent in LA is upheld yet this same court rejected the DETAILED findings of such in TX?!

    Pure and utter corruption.

  10. This sounds suspiciously like „We’re not excluding Jews, we’re excluding circumcized people. That’s not a protected class.“

  11. WarbossTodd on

    Because of course they did.

If the Democrats get control of the house and senate and don’t make MASSIVE changes to limit the abuse of power from all 3 branches of government then this country is doomed.

Fuck Robert’s, balls and strikes my ass, it’s been his life goal to kill the VRA. Well congratulations you did it hopefully you are remembered with William Rehnquist, Roger Taney, Henry Billings Brown and long list of other scumbags who have been on the court.

This is what happens when you don’t fight back against fascism. I’ve watched this erosion since 1980.

  14. No_Construction2407 on

Trump and Republicans are going to take your voting rights away piece by piece.

  15. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Right’s Act the following year were considered landmark legislation. That was then. Roberts put the first nail in the coffin in 2013’s *Shelby County v. Holder,* and Trump’s three picks are sealing it shut.

  16. Cue red state emergency redistricting to sneak back in Jim Crow-inspired gerrymanders.

  17. Sir_thinksalot on

Why is this gerrymander wrong but others fine? Seems like hypocrisy and double standards.

  18. CrimsonHeretic on

I will never forgive anyone who has ever voted for Trump or who has sat out elections in the US since 2016.

  19. Make no mistake, it’s a shameful attack on Black voter representation.

Does anyone know what the practical damage will be? I’m guessing that the redrawn district will now favour the Republican. Would this threaten any more Democrat seats for the midterms?

  20. chiefgreenleaf on

Multiple justice in the highest court commit, on the daily, crimes that would get them thrown in jail if they sat on any other court in the country. Seems like a pretty big loophole to let supreme court justices openly take bribes, and then still take these decisions seriously

  21. Lonely_Refuse4988 on

All these headlines need to point out the problem – 6 hack Republican justices on SCOTUS vote to limit Voting Rights Act! 🤷‍♂️

  22. texascannonball on

Jill Stein voters, and voters who stayed home in 2016: You are directly responsible for his. No amount of mental gymnastics will change that.

  23. Meanwhile my dad can’t understand why I am still angry with him for voting republican his whole life

  24. Retake the House. Retake the Senate. Retake the presidency. Eliminate the filibuster. Reform the court. Enshrine voting rights. Ban gerrymandering. This is the only way.

  25. Pillowsmeller18 on

america went from a nation that saved Europe from Nazis, to the first nation on the moon, to a nation of imbeciles.

How far it has fallen is a disgrace. It should serve as a lesson to any world leading nation, what happens to its citizens when they become comfortable, that they forget to focus on internal issues over profit.

  26. While I agree with the anger and general sentiment, the way the case was brought…if you really look at it this is basically the only way they could rule.

While yes, the idea of the voting rights act is to allow minorities more representation and a more fair election for them. The lower court fucked it up by mandating they change the maps based on race alone. No matter if they say you have to add a white/black/Asian/indigenous district to a map based on that sole characteristic and only that characteristic(what the lower courts did) isn’t what the Voting Rights Act is about.

Being mad about the domino effects this decision causes is appropriate and I agree with, it makes it harder to enforce the voting rights act and makes it even harder to prove discrimination via a map in court. These are true and valid and I am not dismissing them, just feels like even with a more liberal court SCOTUS hands were already tied by lower courts forcing them to draw a map based solely on race nothing else.

  27. Next Dem president needs to pack the court and pass a federal gerrymandering ban

  28. PeanutConfident8742 on

The „let’s limit people’s ability to impact the government safely and predictably“ strategy has NEVER backfired for the ruling class before and I see no reason why it would now. Let’s all just sit back, have a cup of tea and a nice slice of cake, and wait for this to all blow over.

  29. Huge-Ad2263 on

Happy return to the 1950s, everyone. Well, with the institutionalized racism at least. The top tax brackets can stay in the past.

  30. The south is completely fucked. Racially gerrymandered maps are going to be passed like wildfire.

  31. What is the point of passing laws when 9 senile assholes can just say „nah, this isnt constitutional actually“ and it nullifies said passed law?

  32. HerbaciousTea on

So the conservative majority in the Supreme Court decided that it’s not racial discrimination to explicitly take racial demographic data, and lump all minorities in one district to reduce their voting power far below that of anyone else, in direct violation of the Voting Rights Act.

But that it IS racial discrimination to UNDO that racial gerrymander… because apparently it’s now discriminatory to redistrict for equal representation for racial minorities because that means you *considered race as a factor*.

These vile, anti-democratic ratfucks need to face consequences.

  33. Revolutionary-Nap on

At this point, the SC is an illegitimate body. I think if I was the Governor of a blue state, I would just ignore the SC and do it anyway. Enact a law and the SC says it is unconstitutional? Don’t care, we’re doing it anyway.

  34. goopersgonnagoopman on

So they’re violating the exact laws they are pushing on others, with the order they think is fixing it.

Someone came with a complaint that racism already happened and they said, well yeah but fixing it NOW, would take racism, and that’s racist and illegal!…

  35. anon-a-SqueekSqueek on

The Supreme court is a low class explicitly sycophantic wing of the Republican party. Fuck them. They are illegitimate. They broke the social contract. If they are not giving us a law worth respecting than we do not owe them order.

The country is destabilizing. Good. We should be unstable. There needs to be a consequence to the rich destroying society.

  36. NeptuneOverlord43045 on

This needs to be the rallying cry for democrats.

It is long past time to start fighting dirty. It is time for solidarity and unity. Every single democratically controlled state should be implementing the most extreme gerrymandered maps possible. Republicans have been doing this for decades, well before Texas recent redistricting.

What that means is that Republicans don’t have as much gerrymandering potential right now. They’ve been outpacing Dems on gerrymandering by about 400%

Theoretically that means Dems have a lot of ground that could be made up through gerrymandering. There is no reason at this point to be hesitant. The outcome is either Dems retake power that was unfairly stolen by republicans, or SCOTUS/congress pulls their head out of their asses once democrats start making serious gerrymandered gains and puts an end to all gerrymandering on both sides permanently.

But this will not happen on its own, that much is clear. It has to be forced, and only democrats can force it. LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD.

  37. This is exactly why RBJ wasn’t a „queen“. She is a dumbass who held power til her death and now cost all the rights she fought for. She didn’t play it safe and retire under Obama when she was 77 years old.

One party rule. There it is fellow Americans. Fascism came to America wrapped in a flag, carrying a bible. This is fascism.

Fascism is a **far‑right, authoritarian, ultranationalist** political ideology and movement that seeks a dictatorial leader, one‑party rule, and total subordination of individuals to the nation or race, often enforced through violence and suppression of opposition.
