    Racists gonna racist.

Edit: To be clear, we are about to see a cascade of weakened voting power for minoritites. This ruling effectively makes it ok to racially gerrymander as long as you call it partisan gerrymandering.

  2. Instead of this endless gerrymandering America could have just adopted proportional voting, which would be fair and also give chances to small parties

Republicans are going to redistrict tight margins and end up losing a lot of seats in a BLUE TSUNAMI year.

  4. I’m not defending the court decision but there is no way Louisiana is going to have zero black voting districts, it will have one in all likely hood. If they put all the black voters in other districts they risk flipping those districts so they will keep one black majority district out of political expediency.

Same is probably true for South Carolina and ‚bama

  5. „Gerrymandering“ is named after Elbridge Gerry, the Governor of Massachusetts in 1812, who signed a controversial bill redesigning electoral districts to favor his party. A resulting district was shaped like a mythical salamander. Gerry was a member of Democratic-Republican party and was trying to oppose Federalists.

  6. Backup, Nashville isn’t blue? I know people who live there and have visited many times, and it is one of the most blue cities I’ve ever been to outside of the Coastal states.

  7. SCOTUS did not gut Section 2 of the VRA; only two of the justices want to toss Section 2. What they said is that you are not required to go out of your way to draw a minority-majority district if you possibly mathematically can draw one, no matter how tortured of a shape that is. They preserved the proscription against intentionally cracking minority-majority districts as is shown in the second map.

There is a breaking point with gerrymandering where you can gerrymander too much to where you support is spread too thin I feel like we are at that point especially with everything going on

Drawing a district explicity to create a majority minority district is still gerrymandering, no matter how well intentioned the concept is.

We need to double the size of the house. That would alleviate a lot of this nonsense.

  10. That means Illinois can probably get all blue seats too. Hopefully, this somehow leads to gerrymandering reform at the federal level though

Race shouldn’t be a factor whatsoever in congressional districts. Neither should politics, an its long past time for computer program to draw them.

Pure numbers only, with a preference for existing administrative and geographical boundaries please.

Worth mentioning that at the current stage the second map is purely hypothetical. Of the states on the map, Florida is the only one with a current gerrymander plan. The others may now create their own plans, but no guarantee they will match the ones on this map.

Legislation/Taxation without representation. The GOP are unable to win without cheating, because they know if a blue wave ever happens in this country again, it will be near impossible for them to ever regain power. This is especially true if the correct Dems gain power and are able to fix the decades of bullshit that the Reps have forced into normalcy.

There also needs to be an established, non-convoluted path to impeaching and removing SC Justices, especially when they have been confirmed to be compromised, or proven to have lied during their confirmation hearings.

NC is not going to be that red, it’s already super gerrymandered. Also, Georgia will likely keep their black districts, otherwise it harms their incumbents. They are liIterally 70%-80% democrat districts, feeding them to red districts may not be smart.

  15. Maps should be made by unaffiliated 3rd parties held to a standard of fairness

Id be curious which of these districts would suddenly be within a 10, 15, or 20 point swing. Certainly not all of them, but perhaps a significant number.

  17. As someone on the sidelines (Canadian), aren’t both sides doing this? It’s very confusing for my dumbass.

  18. SCOTUS says, „Racial gerrymandering?“ Nay Nay.“ Political gerrymandering. “ Yay Yay.“ Crypto, cash , goods and service bribes are a okay. But no personal checks please.

Wow, even without city names on the map you can still tell where Raleigh, Charlotte, and Atlanta are on the second map.

Honestly, I’m tired of this shit.

Maybe it’s best for America to be run into the ground by Republicans. It’s the only way these idiots will finally understand how bad one party rule is. And when the idiots see they can’t get out of one party rule at least that will be karma.

The idiots are going to let billionaires own America and are actively helping a Putin-like dictatorship form. After that, those idiots are useless to them.

Great, now we’re just making shit up, I see. Anything to justify the authoritarian creep.

  22. What we need is compact districts that follow existing county and city boundaries. Congress could pass such a law tomorrow, and it would likely be upheld even by this Supreme Court.

  23. What’s it called when it’s not a voluntary secession, but rather a forcible ejection? We should do that.

  24. hoggie_and_doonuts on

Remove the cap on the number of House of Representative members and aim for parity in the population size if the districts. The HoR grew with the county until the 1930s when artificial limits were set. Those limits can be removed and this becomes less of an issue.

Certain supreme court justices need to be tossed in prison for their billionaire friends buying them RV’s for votes

  26. Of course they did.
So can’t New York, cali, etc do the same thing with their maps now?
    And take even more seats?

I’m confused as to how this doesn’t swing both ways?

  27. FEMA_Camp_Survivor on

The only way for the map on the right to work would be extreme voter repression, more so than currently practiced. Otherwise, a hardcore conservative won’t win all those Districts.

  28. omegaphallic on

It won’t save Republicans, in fact I suspect it will end up back firing, because instead of losing one district to a black majority, it will lose a pile of them because they are also losing support among white folks.

  29. It’s interesting noting how much more compact the republican favoring map is compared to the minority-majority compliant map (with maybe the exception of the Florida map).

The Civil War never ended and the confederates are winning every battle.
