Before she dies of skin cancer, she’ll look like an old leather bag!!!

I imagine every movement she makes will make a sound at one point.
OffRedFloyd on
She did it because she was being bullied? Are folk not bullying her anymore now she looks like a haggard leather couch that’s been out the back for 8 months.
OverTheCandlestik on
Mental illness. Firmly acknowledged that she’s already showing signs of skin cancer and has already done irreparable damage.
Edit (didn’t finish my train of thought) actively knows she’s poisoned her skin and will likely suffer horrendous consequences yet still uses them. Girl get to the doctors, a dermatologist and a therapist.

As much as i wanna laugh at her this is honestly just too sad. Not even 20 and shes done that to herself
Gloomy-Wishbone6055 on
I love the sunbeds. Love them. But Jesus Christ himself couldn’t have prepared me for her to look like that.

This is just…. sad.
While obviously an adult, I hope somebody can step in and get her the help she needs and it sounds like she wants.
FornyHucker22 on
Swear I seen her in a shop once, or someone equally bad looking 😳

If someone like this can’t get the support they need for mental health services, then that explains why we’re in the state we’re in today. She’s literally killing herself.
wutanglan90 on
We need better services for mental health but without significant changes to online and social media culture I feel that may not be enough.
Its strange that the comments so far are very callous towards her yet comments are very supportive towards trans people who also change their physical appearance due to mental illness. You can’t celebrate mental illness in one demographic then ridicule it in another.
The affects of self harm from mental health issues should not be celebrated or ridiculed.

This is a mental illness. No different to an alcoholic who keeps drinking. I feel very sorry for this young woman. Please be kind.

Poor thing, she is going to get skin cancer. What the fuck are her parents doing

Clearly shows the places she goes to dont care about her health
OkFlow1178 on
People are so nasty, she has a mental illness/addiction and is trying to raise awareness. She literally says multiple times she knows it’s really bad and she wishes she could stop but she feels helpless to stop herself, have some empathy

It sounds a great deal like she needs secure residential mental health care. Although she’ll probably die on a waiting list the way things are going.

Just had a look at her TikTok and she does not look like she does here in the pictures, these are edited with a tanning filter. She’s very tanned in her TikToks but not alarmingly so.
VelmaSparkles on
This is interesting to me, are there no age limits to sunbed shops? Do they not have a duty of care given the risks involved? Are there not ways to prevent these situations getting to this point? I feel like these things should be better regulated.
I remember a time when I was a child, my mother had an old style tube sunbed over the end of her bed in our home. She ended up with a melanoma on her back that had to be removed. I’m amazed this has been allowed to happen, but I don’t know what (if any) controls are in place.
GoldBear79 on
My brother in law is dying of melanoma caused by sunbed usage. I’ve seen him cry in rage at his own regret.

Woman at my work is the same. She spent most of her life on tanning beds and has been dealing with skin cancer for the past 5 years or so now and is still going on tanning holidays and going on the beds. Literally dying and she still wont stop.

I don’t think one persons challenges with mental illness should be posted on the internet for everyone to gawk and leer at.

I can’t help thinking that this story would have been improved enormously by the addition of one clear photo. Really slipshod work.

I feel sorry for her, this is clearly a (admittedly strange) form of self harm. I had skin cancer last year, it’s not something I wish on anyone, I hope she gets the help she needs.
TrainResponsible9714 on
It’s not a tanning addiction it’s a compulsion, like ocd or similar, that’s just how it comes out. It’s very sad as a society she makes money from tiktok that encourages her, and this newspaper story gets hits on her story, and we’re talking about it on reddit before she’s even seen a doctor about it.
jembella1 on
at this point is it even reversible? not the damage but the skin tone i guess. just yikes poor kid.
Peachy-SheRa on
It’s really difficult watching people make poor choices that can seriously limit their lifespan, but she should be applauded for speaking out about her addiction.
Getting a blast of very concentrated UV is seriously damaging to health, even once. There’s no such thing as getting a ‘base tan’. The UV damage at DNA level is done. Sunbeds are extremely bad for us.
The question is why does she need that dopamine hit badly?
It goes back to her being bullied at school, which can really affect people’s sense of self. It’s the bullies themselves who need to ask why they wanted to abuse another person to the point that person is now severely damaging their health. All so they could get off by hurting someone else?
The zero-sum game some humans play is very cruel.

Anyone that has never dealt with the exhausting, humiliating, soul-crushing thing that is a compulsion (let alone a very visible compulsion) will never truly understand just how miserable and out of control she probably feels. I think she’s incredibly brave to talk so openly about this

Christ. You have to scroll down far to see that she was literally just white before she started. That’s mental!

Shame on the tanning shops for allowing it to get this far. What happened to having a duty of care for others?

Therapists should be as everywhere and accessible as hairdressers or beauty salons on the high street.
Wonder how many people could be helped sooner before unhealthy coping mechanisms are hard to overcome
abyssal-isopod86 on
She needs psychiatric help in order to stop.
Addiction of any kind can rarely be beaten alone, let alone an unusual one – I speak from experience.

Cancer aside, if this isn’t the biggest advertisement for wearing sunscreen to prevent premature aging… she genuinely looks 30-40 in the pictures and yet she’s 19!!?!?
pixiecub on
Anyone know what’s addictive about sunbeds? Is it just the tan-look she’s ‘addicted to’ or is there something deeper?
Neonexe on
Where were her parent when she was getting addicted to this at 16 and 17?!
It’s illegal to use a tanning bed until you’re 18 so how was this even happening?
This young woman has been let down by the people around her.
IDPTheory on
OK surely we all know the tanning is symptomatic? It’s the result of something else going on that needs addressing. Something about self image. Girl needs therapy.
